“Well-located and very helpfull base for exploring Ecuador.”
Reviewed March 4, 2013

This is a 200-year-old house that's being remodeled into a very nice B&B by the Sanchez family who go out of heir way to be helpful. We found it to be a great place to fly into and then leave and come back (to the jungle, the Galapagos, etc.). Bernardo Sanchez speaks English like an American (i.e. colloquially), helpful in a country where not many others do unless there's a need.
It's well-located in old town, close to a neat little street called the Ronda and across the street from a big Franciscan church (San Francisco). Everything you want is within a short walk of this place.
While it's not a Hilton (which is in another part of town), most of the rooms are spacious and comfortable, the showers are splendid and the food in the restaurant on the ground floor is top notch.
Can't go wrong here. We're in our 60's and found a lot of others our age, especially Europeans, enjoying the place. You can pick a plastic hotel that will convince you you've not yet left the US, or you can begin to immerse yourself in this wonderful county and culture with one of it's finest examples, the Sanchez family and their hotel, the Portal de Cantuna!

Some people define 5-star hotels by great service, modern amenities, and ritzy restaurants. I'm more taken with places with charm and character, with a friendly atmosphere, and interesting location. By the latter definition, Portal de Cantuna is a true gem of a 5-star hotel.

We stayed for four nights and during that time got to know the entire family running the hotel. The hotel itself was a private residence which was only remodeled to become a hotel one year ago when the owner, Mario Sanchez, was persuaded by his sons to make the conversion. This took quite a bit of work, including putting a cover on the formerly open interior courtyard and adding bathrooms to the guest rooms. Mario's sons run the hotel along with their mother, the charming Sonia. Bernardo was especially hospitable, including hooking us up with his friend Dante, who offers a variety of tours around and out of town.

A few general comments: The WiFi service in the public areas was excellent, but not so great in our room. We had room 13, overlooking the courtyard entrance. It is not the quietest room but that didn't bother us. I had the misfortune of having to spend an entire day in that room recovering from a meal I ate before I arrived, but found the bed and the room quite comfortable. I did lose count of the number of bells I heard ringing at Iglesias de San Francisco, which is right across the street from the hotel.

The location of Portal de Cantua is marvelous. It is on the northern side of the old town, right around the corner from the Plaza de San Francisco, a short walk from the presidential palace and also Calle la Ronda, and extremely close to Iglesia de La Compania de Jesus as well as the Casa del Alabado Museum, all of which are worth seeing.

The restaurant downstairs proved to be a nice surprise. It is called Cocina Urbana con sabor ecuador and is run by a talented young chef named Carlos, who is Cordon Bleu-trained in Peru. The hotel serves a decent breakfast as part of your room rate in the morning, and Carlos provides a limited but creative menu in the evening. We ate there several times and enjoyed every meal.

There were very few cons to our stay at Portal de Cantuna. The towels were not the plushest, and the housekeeping service was a bit spotty. But the historic nature of the place as great (some of the furniture was built in place, I understand), the location was perfect, and the welcoming nature of the Sanchez family couldn't have been warmer. With the new airport just open it's about an hour's drive to get into old town Quito, but this place was worth the drive. I'll close by saying that I've traveled rather widely and this was just about the favorite place I have ever had the pleasure of staying.

Great location in old town, the property is a very beautiful colonial building and the owners have maintained the design and interior to reflect that. Excellent shower pressure with hot water. Nice breakfast of eggs, buns, fruit and coffee included. Wish we could've stayed longer.

The staff is very friendly and helpful.

Check out is at noon, however for a modest fee we were able to keep the room until 8:30pm to accomodate our evening flight.

Great little restaurant downstairs. Upon request the chef made me an excellent vegetarian dish as the menu did not have veggie options.

We stayed in two rooms in this hotel both were very clean, pleasant and excellent value.

The building itself is very beautiful and interesting, it has a lot of character. Loved the family hosts, they made us feel at home, nothing was too much trouble, they know the city very well and offered loads of advice, hailed us taxis and directed us to excellent restaurants. We walked around the surrounding beautiful Historical area in the day time and evening - without problem.

The wifi worked better in the hotel, than anywhere else we went to in ecuador.

Take advantage of the laundry service - excellent value.

We loved this hotel - friendly, charming, quirky, and different from the usual hotel experience. Our hosts were delightful and so helpful, and it's not often you get to hug your hosts goodbye when you leave a hotel. The location is superb for the old town, and the house is so welcoming to get back to after a long day's sightseeing. If you're looking for somewhere with real character and charm, do yourself a favour and stay here.

I just stayed here in November and had a great visit. Staying here is like visiting distant relatives. Everyone is super friendly, helpful - arranging taxis for outings with other guests - and the location could not be better. It is half a block from the main square. Everything is in walking distance. They also have a great restaurant for dinner, as going out at night is a bit dangerous for a single women after dark. Everyone speaks fluent English. The rooms are clean and nicely decorated. Everything is working as it should, free WiFi in the common area, a lovely glass covered balcony area with comfortable couches, board games, and lots of opportunity to meet the other guests. I booked the airport pick-up, as I got in at midnight. They also arranged for a 3 AM car to go back to the airport, all a great rates. I can definitively recommend this place, if you are looking for good value, a safe, convenient place with lots of local atmosphere. Loved it and would stay there again.

We stayed at Portal de Cantuna for two weeks and it was magical. The location, across the street from Plaza San Francisco, puts it right in the heart of the beautiful old city, but it was the unique design of this B&B that made it so wonderful. There's an open central (covered) patio which serves as a meeting hall, and there is a tea room and a formal living room plus a good restaurant in the courtyard. We made wonderful instant friends here. The owners are very warm and accomodating and had a knack of anticipating our every need.
Spending two weeks in Quito and its environs was not enough time to see and experience everything. We took daily trips to surrounding towns and sights including spectacular mountains and volcanos. Bernardo, our host, arranged for Dante, a wonderful and thoroughly knowledgeable tour guide, to take us on daily trips and the whole thing was seamlessly coordinated.

Room Tip: We had a room in the front and we loved the street noises, but light sleepers might ask for a quiete...
