Shaman Relics are great. A short video at the end gives a historical perspective. It is always nice to learn a bit more about the people that populated Ecuador before the Spanish came to change the culture. It did take a few minutes wandering back and forth to find the place.

We thought this was a great museum. It was $4 per person and that included an English audio self guided tour. The audio was great. It told you about the art and the culture. It was one of my favorite things that we did in Quito.

exquisite set up, both of pre-columbian art as well as of the restored 17thC house itself, plus the museum store has very well-designed goods

This is a beautifully designed museum with a clear focus and simple presentation of artifacts in wonderfully elegant surrounds. The entire museum is focused around the theme of the three levels in the world: the underworld (where largely evil and threatening spirits live), the middle world (where we mere mortals are to be found), and the celestial world (where the Gods and positive spirits exist). Using this unifying theme the museum then takes you through the various tribal variations on this religious/spiritual backdrop to Ecuadorian history. Architecturally there is a stunning wall of glass with outdoor plants and trees as a backdrop in one room and an enchanting wall of dried twigs and branches in another. There is no sense of crowded objects crammed into a place but rather the presentation is elegantly sparse and simple, giving a sense of space and freedom. On the practical side there is an accompanying audio guide available in English that I'd strongly recommend you to use. After about an hour touring this wonderful museum I exited feeling like I'd just returned from a trip through time to these other worlds. For me the experience was up there in the top five museums I have ever visited along with such places as the Musee D'Orsay in Paris or Te Papa in Wellington, New Zealand.

If this is your first encounter with Pre-Columbian Art, you will definitely appreciate it but if you have seen similar museums in Peru, Mexico City, Colombia, you will notice that the art presented here is somewhat limited from a small region and the explanations are not that great beyond estimated dates and place where it was found... still worth your time...
