My wife and I stayed 4 nights here in June and it was one of the best stays we have had anywhere. Paco and Elena are the best hosts and make you feel like family. Paco picked us up from the airport after our flight changed from 5:30pm to 10pm and then didnt actually get in until 2am, he was standing there with a sign waiting for us.

The bed was comfortable and we had a room with a private bath, although there is some outside noise from the street we didn't find it loud enough to keep us up.

Breakfast was at whatever time we requested and Elena would make a 4 course meal out of it. Fresh fruit platter and Juice(as well as coffee and tea), eggs with ham and bread with dulce de leche. It was the best start to our day.

We also had great nights hanging out with Paco who is an amazing artist and showed me his art work over some of his stash of great rum with coke.

If you stay here make sure to ask Paco to show you his dance moves... guy has the moves like Jagger.

Thanks again for a great stay.

The hosts were generous and accommodating. The food and Cafe con leche was delicious. The beds were very comfortable. Transpiration was coordinated for us on site. We were able to travel to the coast via a van for a reasonable price. Although not central this hotel was located in a quiet neighbourhood.

Chez Elena Review (Quito, Ecuador: 15 June- 6 September 2014)

If you are going to stay in Quito, Ecuador, there is no question that you should stay at the Chez Elena guesthouse/hotel. This is family-ran accommodation and is much better than the impersonal experience you would get at a hotel. We stayed long-term and a weekly cleaning service was provided. They also offer three extremely delicious meals a day for a very affordable price (I think it was about U$3.70 per person). It’s great to have immediate access to the local cuisine. The rooms are clean and well put together. We had everything we needed to function in the kitchen for two people. I know that the different rooms have different resources depending on your length of stay. The location is in the neighborhood Orquedeas and it is right next to a major bus line, so getting to downtown is very simple. It’s nice too because the neighborhood is a lot safer than downtown, so if we needed to go out at night for whatever reason, it was totally fine. There is also a local store that is literally a few houses down that has the basics for groceries. In addition to being extremely hospitable and nice, the family also offers some affordable tours around the city and other excursions. We took advantage of the walking tour so we could know where to buy cheaper groceries and find other things around town. The family also has a friend who will drive you around for the same price as a taxi service, but you know it’s safe because they know him. We became good friends with everybody. The neighborhood is quiet and we really never had any problems with anything. I’ll always remember our stay here and if we return we would definitely stay here again! Thank you Chez Elena!

FAMILY run guesthouse, mostly French people. Extra courteous, and very kind. They worked real hard to make our stay comfortable. Be prepared to share bathrooms, there are many for their guesthouse of 24..it is on a bus route, and you can get to the Middle of the Earth for less than a dollar.

Room Tip: It wasn't a typical hotel, more like bed and breakfast.

If you are looking for a true Ecuadorian experience run by a wonderful family (Elena's family) and not a classic Hilton/Holiday Inn westernized lodging, I would highly recommend a stay at Chez Elena Guesthouse.
Since they opened the new airport in Quito, Ecuador, the taxi from the airport is about a 45 minute drive and should cost you about $25US for the trip. We arrived at about 7 p.m. local time and Elena was more than happy to cook us up a wonderful dinner meal. I have included pictures of the meal so that people can get a full understanding of what $4US will get you in Ecuador. The meal was delicious, especially after eating the microwaved airplane food it was great to have an Ecuadorian home cooked meal.
We went with the budget room because we are cheap and were pleasantly surprised to have our own toilet, sink and shower for $15 a person per night. The beds were always made the next day and the garbage was always removed. Elena opened her family to us, and we went out with her husband's brother one night to dance and celebrate a contest one of their cousins had won. Elena and her family were so kind and made us feel safe, her husband took us to a volcanic crater and the middle of the earth to show us around Quito as our spanish is not good. Her husband is an Ecuadorian artist and showed us some of his work, we wanted to buy one but it wouldn't have survived the trip home in our luggage. Every morning we were served with fresh fruit juice (try the strawberry juice or fresh squeezed orange juice, its the greatest), bread, butter, jam, and scrambled eggs before trekking into the city. The bus is two hundred meters away and cost just 25 cents to take into the city. The hotel is secured with a fence around it to keep the occupants safe. The only reason it got 4/5 for 'Sleep Quality' and 'Location' is because we were not used to waking up in the morning at sun-up by a rooster and barking dogs and the neighbourhood is about 10 minutes away from the 'Old Town'. But this all added to the authenticity of the experience, and the next time we go to Ecuador I will DEFINITELY be booking a stay at Chez Elena Guesthouse. Magnifico!!!!!

Room Tip: There are various types of rooms here, we opted for the cheap room $29 per night for a two-person room: Two twin beds with a toilet and sink in one room outside the bedroom and a shower in another room. There are other rooms with a queen- and twin-sized bed, seating area, kitchen and bathroom in the room.
