If you are looking for a true Ecuadorian experience run by a wonderful family (Elena's family) and not a classic Hilton/Holiday Inn westernized lodging, I would highly recommend a stay at Chez Elena Guesthouse.
Since they opened the new airport in Quito, Ecuador, the taxi from the airport is about a 45 minute drive and should cost you about $25US for the trip. We arrived at about 7 p.m. local time and Elena was more than happy to cook us up a wonderful dinner meal. I have included pictures of the meal so that people can get a full understanding of what $4US will get you in Ecuador. The meal was delicious, especially after eating the microwaved airplane food it was great to have an Ecuadorian home cooked meal.
We went with the budget room because we are cheap and were pleasantly surprised to have our own toilet, sink and shower for $15 a person per night. The beds were always made the next day and the garbage was always removed. Elena opened her family to us, and we went out with her husband's brother one night to dance and celebrate a contest one of their cousins had won. Elena and her family were so kind and made us feel safe, her husband took us to a volcanic crater and the middle of the earth to show us around Quito as our spanish is not good. Her husband is an Ecuadorian artist and showed us some of his work, we wanted to buy one but it wouldn't have survived the trip home in our luggage. Every morning we were served with fresh fruit juice (try the strawberry juice or fresh squeezed orange juice, its the greatest), bread, butter, jam, and scrambled eggs before trekking into the city. The bus is two hundred meters away and cost just 25 cents to take into the city. The hotel is secured with a fence around it to keep the occupants safe. The only reason it got 4/5 for 'Sleep Quality' and 'Location' is because we were not used to waking up in the morning at sun-up by a rooster and barking dogs and the neighbourhood is about 10 minutes away from the 'Old Town'. But this all added to the authenticity of the experience, and the next time we go to Ecuador I will DEFINITELY be booking a stay at Chez Elena Guesthouse. Magnifico!!!!!

Room Tip: There are various types of rooms here, we opted for the cheap room $29 per night for a two-person room: Two twin beds with a toilet and sink in one room outside the bedroom and a shower in another room. There are other rooms with a queen- and twin-sized bed, seating area, kitchen and bathroom in the room.

The family is amazing, and their heartfelt attention is something you can't experience at a large hotel.
Great value for the money, but more importantly, a nice connection to the people and culture of Ecuador, especially the artistic aspects of Ecuador.

I'm really sorry for all these drawbacks.
Unfortunately the reservation was made at the last minute and the maid had not yet left the soap, toilet paper and towels in the bathroom.

It is true that there are a little cold nights in Quito (50 ° F), which is why we have provided our customers with extra blankets.

Thanks again for your comments as they help us to improve our service.
