“Comfort blanket of kindness”
Reviewed August 28, 2013

A little fearful of low cost, mother and 18 daughter breathed sigh of relief with this wonderful family-owned and run hotel. Picked up, as promised, even on a holiday! Comfortable. Clean. The best part was breakfast with an eclectic travels of the world. NY teacher. Swedish young woman environmental scientist and another family traveling with a young son. Library was shared with visitors and the travel maps really helped. High security gates had embedded broken glass on top. High marks for smiles and customer service as the perfect place to get bearings before meeting up with tour group.

My 15 year old daughter and I took our first trip to Ecuador and stayed at Posada Tambuca while in Quito. It was the best decision I ever made! Yolanda and Carlos truly treated us like family. They took care of us, gave us important information regarding the city and their son Carlitos give us tours of Old Town and Telefériqo. The rooms were cozy, warm and clean, the breakfasts were out of this world (I don't know where Yolanda got her fresh juice every morning, but that's something not to miss!) and included brewed coffee. Tambuca was quiet but close to everything you could possibly need. Needless to say, Yolanda is truly my mom away from home and Tambuca is my home away from home. Can't wait to get back!

Very much value for your money. Good breakfast, good facilities, clean (bath) rooms. Especially the service was outstanding. The hotel owner was very helpful: storing luggage for longer periods was no problem. Neither was arriving at 2am. And when we were hesitating about walking 500 meters to the bus station late at night, the owner offered us a ride.

I don't even know where to start. Posada Tambuca is simply one of the best places I have ever stayed. We spent 3 nights in a triple room with shared bathroom - the beds were incredibly comfortable and cozy! It can get cold at night in Quito, but the big comforters here ensure no one sleeps cold. We loved that every room is themed to represent a different region in Ecuador. The shared bathrooms are big and never an issue to access what you need. The wifi was fast and very reliable. The breakfast, though we only got to eat it once, was great. Location is great, within easy walking distance of La Mariscal and the Trole to Old Town.

But what makes the difference here is the attention that Yolanda and her family give to each guest. When we arrived, Yolanda's son Carlos (who speaks solid English) welcomed us and gave us the lay of the land. On our second night, my wife and I got violently ill. We spent half the night in the bathroom (and we apologize to all the other guests who may have heard us throughout the night). In the morning, we realized we needed to go to a hospital. Yolanda, in the middle of making breakfast, drove us to the nearest hospital (which thankfully was only a few blocks from the house). She then came back later in the day to check in on us, see how we were doing and speak to the medical staff on our behalf. As we were supposed to check out that day, she offered to let us leave our stuff in the room well beyond check-out time and then stored our bags for the night when the hospital decided to admit us and keep us overnight. We owe Yolanda and family our deepest thanks for helping us through a very tough situation.

If we are ever back in Quito, we know where we're staying!

Room Tip: The Galapagos room has a beautiful painting of the islands over one of the beds!

Yolanda is indeed your favorite sister, Mom, or aunt. Whatever we needed, she provided. We loved the breakfast with a different delicious fresh juice each morning. And sitting around at night or in the afternoon was like a UN convention--sharing stories with people from Canada, Australia, England, Venezuela, etc. The shared bathroom which had been a concern of mine, was not an issue. As with most older homes in Ecuador, all sounds carry. If there happens to be an inconsiderate guest with a night departure, you WILL hear them, but the warmth of Yolanda and her family overrides this. The location was very convenient to shops and the big red bus to old town. My husband wanted posters from tourist information, and Yolanda "as just stopping by there." She went out of her way for us. She knew where to purchase alpaca wool, was always smiling and efficient. In fact, she came out at 3am and stood with us looking at the full moon while we awaited our taxi. We miss you, Yolanda!

I loved this place. It was clean, in a convenient location and the host (Yolanda) was an angel. The bathroom is shared, but clean and there is no wait. The hostel is in a great spot, about a 10 minute walk to the central area, and is very close to main streets so it's no problem to get a cab at any time of day. Carlos and Yolanda's other son (?) can get by in English, but Yolanda doesn't speak much English...it was okay for us as our Spanish is passable, but I'd suggest knowing a bit of Spanish. All and all an amazing stay, and I would highly recommend!

This was the best place I stayed in Ecuador. I stayed once for 5 nights and then again for 3 nights. I was never disappointed. Yolanda was a kind and generous hostess. The facilities were clean. The location was very convenient yet quiet. I loved the fresh juice every morning, and even when we had to leave at 5 am, Yolanda gave us breakfast to go. I would highly recommend it.
