Achiote is a gem in the middle of Gringolandia, aka Mariscal. This restaurant features traditional Ecuadorian dishes like ceviches and hornado with great presentation. It's a step up from many similar restaurants.
This small restaurant has a relaxed ambiance with huge windows to watch the people passing by. There's a live tree growing in the middle of the dining room.
The menu is full of exciting dishes like fritada, soups, and even cuy. We had crab ceviche and hornado with a side order of chocolate rice. All of it was delicious and beautifully presented.
The service was very good with English available if necessary!
There's an extensive wine list too. This restaurant caters to gringos; it's clear with higher than average prices. The prices are worth it for an excellent and romantic dinner.

Most ecuadorian restaurants aren't really above the street-food level (nothing wrong with that) but we thought we'd like to try ecuadorian food with a higher quality of ingredient and we weren't disappointed.

My wife had the mixed crab ceviche, which she loved (I tried it but will never be converted to ceviche!) and I had the shrimps in coconut, which was delicious.

This is a little more expensive than most restaurants in Quito but still cheap by international standards so I'd recommend a visit to anyone visiting Quito.

I went to this restaurant on the last day of my trip to Ecuador. My fiance and I wanted to try the shrimp ceviche. The waiter suggested that we try the ceviche melody (an up sell) and we agreed to change our order. I'm so glad we did because it was amazing! There were three different types of ceviche; mango, original and passion fruit. On the side, chocolate rice was served. I'm used to ceviche coming with chips but the chocolate rice was even better. If you go, get the melody ceviche. We ate at a number of different places while in Ecuador, but this place definitely topped the list.

It was really fantastic. It's a real restaurant with a true chef at work. We were up sold the shrimp ceviche (3 different kinds) and it was superb. We ate at a number of restaurants featuring local food, and while some were quite good, this was the best.

I had visited Achiote this time last year with another tour group, and the service had been so slow I went home before the entire meal was served.

This time my experience was much better. Food was served promptly, and the good English spoken by the servers was impressive and makes it much easier for foreigners.

Decor is nice, but the music...was terrible. If you're into 70s soft rock hits, mixed with James Blunt, some of the softer Police hits, great. Didn't quite go with the ambience they seemed to want to have.

Nonetheless, the muchines de yuca as a starter-or yuca fritters, are soft and smooth, almost cheesy, on the inside and crisp and crunchy on the outside. Coconut shrimp was served in a tasty coconut milk broth, with a nice avocado salad. The watermelon balls with watermelon granita was a refreshing and light dessert, a great way to end the meal.

Service was all around prompt and not overbearing.

We are sorry about the slow service but we have to clarify that the traditional dishes we offer are a 100% fresh due to the fact that they are prepared right when the customer orders so it is not like fast food at all.
