The hostal I think is great if you don't mind people sitting outside your door chatting all night! We had a nice room on our first stay and the owner looked after our belongings while we flew to Manta & back. We unfortunately had problems with flights to Manta as the company had gone into liquidation and the owner let us use the phone free of charge. Unfortunately our Spanish was not up to it and the only person available was a new volunteer (been in Quito a day) who was absolutely useless so we had to go to and fro Quito airport to buy alternative flights. Having someone more proficient would have reduced the stress we were experiencing and we also came down with salmonella so it was not a great stay for us!! We returned a week later and stayed a final night there. We didn't use the kitchen or have breakfast so cannot comment. The hot water was none existent but that's normal and the location was very run down and a bit dodgy compared to the old town where we had stayed before. We were offered crack so were just a little wary.

We stayed at the Colonial House Quito for 7 nights. By our first day, we felt like we were part of the family. The owner, Ornelia, is a wonderful welcoming host and the volunteers were friendly and helpful. Our room was in the garden and was quiet even amongst the Fiestas de Quito celebrations. We had a private half bath, with a shared shower and this worked out well for us. After a bit of trial and error, we managed to have hot showers. Wifi worked very well in our room. We also took advantage of the shared kitchen to make light meals. We loved the proximity to the plazas and monuments of old town. We did not walk at night but took taxis. We think this is typical of Quito. We are early retirees and enjoyed meeting all kinds of travellers from around the world. Sitting in the garden drinking coffee was a true highlight for us coming from a cold Canadian winter. In addition, the owner went out of her way to arrange tours/trips for us. Colonial House Quito will always be a home away from home in Quito for us.

Old colonial house with very friendly & helpful staff members. The owner arranged trips to suit our budget & time. Open kitchen, garden & relaxing setting!
Walking distance to the old town.

Great value. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Rooms close to the street are noisy if you are a light sleeper like me :-( Garden rooms at the back...

We had a comfortable stay here, the beds were comfy, the rooms clean and the volunteers helpful. However there are a few things that let this place down. Firstly, when we arrived they had no knowledge of our booking. We had booked a double with private bathroom through HostelBookers and had subsequently received an email directly from the hostel confirming our booking. On arrival however, they had no knowledge of our booking. We were offered a double with shared bathroom for our first night and would be moved to a private bathroom the next day. This was fine and we appreciated their apologies, but don't really know how it could have happened. When we were moved the next day, the room only had a private toilet, we still had to share a shower. For the three days we were staying there we also heard of 2 other couples who had similar booking issues.
The second and probably more important aspect to consider is the location of the hostel. We have travelled fairly extensively in South America and this is the first place where it felt unsafe immediately outside the hostel, particularly at night. One couple who were staying at the hostel were mugged at knifepoint in the old town, relatively close to the hostel. There are plenty of warnings about safety at the hostel and you should take heed of them. After dark, make sure you get a taxi everywhere, no matter the distance. All of our taxi drivers also told us that it was a dangerous area and not to go anywhere by foot at night around the hostel.
Please note, accidentally added a rating for fitness centre, but there isn't one!

Room Tip: The Garden rooms are away from the main hostel foot traffic so may be more quiet. We were never give...

Great soft landing into Quito. The staff and volunteers are very helpful, the rooms are charming, it's within walking distance to all the main attractions in the Old City, and it is very easy to organize local day trips with the volunteers. It is also child friendly as we brought our two year old baby with us and they were exceedingly patient. Would not hesitate to recommend this hostel to any families that are travelling and backpacking in the region.

We were here for our first few nights in Ecuador ever and the staff did a fabulous job of looking after us. We paid $10 per bed in a 3 bed room. Breakfast was an extra $3.50 pp extra. Even though the property exudes an old charm type of feel which is nice it was exceptionally clean, there's wifi for you notebookers and two cpu's there with internet for those without. Ornelia the owner is a good lady who does a good job of running the place. It's situated not the best for nightlife though which is easily remedied with a taxi-ride though, However for daylife it's great and there is a great market for breakfast a block away where there are dozens of lil old Ecuadorean ladies selling their specialty dishes where you can get breakfast as well. It's within walking distance to the Trolebus (Plaza del Teatro stop) which goes up and down the city. I would recommend this place.

Room Tip: If you're a couple ask for the double room at the top with it's private bathroom. $25 at th...

We had total of 5 nights here in September 2012. Very helpful staff, room was a decent size. It's an uphill walk when returning from anywhere, which I found difficult with the altitude. Walking distance to the old town attractions, but nothing at all within walking distance as far as meals/cafes are concerned. We got taxis to La Marischal each night for about $4, and they have an abundance of meal options there. Breakfast was pretty good value (and again, you need to eat here as there's nothing else around).
