“Comfortable and Close Get Away”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 12, 2012

This hostel is basic, but comfortable, clean and staff were very friendly. Food was excellent. Manager Remi was highlight. Lot's good walks right out the hostel.

The hostal is in the "middle of nowhere" near Cotopaxi, lovely view.
At first I thought it was a bit pricey but all accomodation in this area is a similar price or more expensive. The setup is very nice - dorm with just candles and a wood-stove for heating (which does keep you warm!). In main area electricity and cosy fireplace.
SHort walk is included in price as are all meals. Portions are not big but are ok. Food not gourmet but just fine I thought for a few days.
Nice bathroom.
No internet - which is kinda logical but just to mention in case someone might hope so ;-)
All very nice, peaceful and pretty. The walk to mountain nearby (not Cotopaxi) is appr 5 hours and def. woth it for its 15+5 dollar.
Only thing I thought was nit great is that they add tax to the drinks you buy and to the price of the walk, instead of just listing the final price. Little "Secret garden rip off" (same at their oteh rhostal in Quito) but still - great place and loved my time there

The secret garden at Cotopaxi is all about the location.
When planning the trip, I was a little concerned about there being no electricity, all kinds of nightmares danced through my head. But I have to say that Secret Garden is one of my fondest memories from our trip that started in Machu Picchu and ended in the Galapagos Islands.
We landed in Quito and rented a car (I recommend a 6 cylinder 4WD). Directions were to follow the Pan American Hwy to the town of Machachi and look for the horse statue (I kid you not) where someone will be there to lead us the rest of the way. After getting lost a few times, we arrived in Machachi in the dark. Our guides met us as promised and led us another hour on a cobblestone road to the middle of nowhere. We arrived well after dinner, but were greeted by our hosts as if we were long lost family. Staff stayed late, fed us a nice meal, and started the wood burning stoves in our rooms. We stayed Unit C, a 2 level cabana which was a little more expensive but totally worth it. The true glory of the experience was the next morning when we were greeted to the sunrise over the pastures with a Cotopaxi backdrop.
Our volunteer hosts were a lovely couple from the Netherlands. They took such good care of us. They took us on a nature walk to the waterfalls and arranged horseback riding at a local farm. Secret Garden is a mixture of backpackers and travelers looking to get away from it all. Dinner is served family style in the main area. There are games, books, conversation, and friendly warm atmosphere to be shared by all.
Besides horseback riding and hiking, you can also visit other local attractions like Cotopaxi National Park and Quilotoa Lake.
Oh and I almost forgot. There is a hot tub for relaxing after you days adventures.

Room Tip: There are plenty of low budget options for back packers. But if you prefer more comfort, I highly r...

We had a fantastic time at secret garden cotopaxi. Hopefully we will be back someday.

The trip to the refuge was great. The other guests were really good value. Our tent was excellent and very warm. We had plenty of food, I'm not sure what the other reviewers are complaining about there - if they were hungry perhaps they should have gone to the trout farm and caught their own dinner.

Room Tip: Stay in one of the tents

I wish I had read reviews before booking because out experience was ruined by the room. In quito we booked the 'luxury' option and upon arrival were shown to the room next to the kitchen. We had it to ourselves but the hot water didn't work and we had to use the communal showers. Had we known we would not have booked and paid 90 dollars, a ridiculous price for Ecuador. Food was ok, but not worth the money we had to pay, fine for the dorm price.
We were unable to get an apology or any discount, which we thought poor of a place dying to deliver a luxury experience.
We also found the 20 USD price for a hike up the volcano way too pricey. We heard the real private rooms were nice but overall we were very disappointed.
The volunteer, Remi, was fine but the others were sort of clueless when it came to understanding the desire for peace and quiet.

The views at Secret Garden Cotopaxi are breathtaking. The prices, not so much. The food was good but portions were dismal. We were always hungry. The afternoon snack was a vegetable platter that was to be split between 12 people. Staff were somewhat rude and overly sarcastic. Remi is the only good one there. He was friendly and always helpful. The rooms were decent but nice with the fires keeping you warm at night. Good hot tub and tours too.

A synopsis of this B&b (2nd b intentionally small due to small meal portions) can be summed-up with a direct quote from the manager: "I like brown bread, as do most people; but since it costs two cents more than white bread, the owner said 'No brown bread.'"
Wow. Shame on you, owner of SG; what a cheapskate!
