“Be Sure What You're Looking For”
Reviewed October 29, 2006

We (my wife and I and two kids, ages 12 and 9) spent a total of three nights at San Jorge Eco Lodge on our way to and from the Galapagos in April of this year. The Lodge is in a beautiful setting perched on the mountains surrounding Quito. Lush gardens can be found on the grounds and along hiking trails going further up the mountains behind the lodge. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. Our lodge host served as a tour guide for us one day taking us on a tour of the old city in Quito and other sights. Meals at the lodge were quite good as well.

Despite the four stars, there are some things one should know before booking a stay at San Jorge. Many of the lodge rooms are quite old. We liked the rustic look and feel. Others may not. The heating system was a fireplace in our room. The owner was in the process of installing central heat in many of the rooms. Sitting at an elevation close to 10,000 feet, it does get cool at night. The pool (unheated) and sauna area of the lodge were quite run down and not of much use.

If you are willing to accept such limitations in exchange for an experience that involves closer interaction with the people of Quito and excellent opportunities for hiking, horse-back riding, bird watching at high altitudes, then the San Jorge Lodge is a great choice. If you are looking for a more luxurious stay in Quito, the lodge would not be a good fit.

I was met by two volunteers from Germany and England when I got to San Jorge. They provide you with anything you need during your stay. These volunteers rotate. The only other person I saw was a waiter. When I first arrived, I was the only guest in this very large establishment. I was put in a room up a hill from the front desk. It was adequate. The couch had stains on it. The bed spreads had seen much better days. Every place is dark and deserted on the grounds. It took me a while to figure out where I was supposed to eat because everything was so dark. One must travel through a very poor area to get to San Jorge. I don´t get the sense that there is any walking to town. Quito is 30 minutes by car. I was really struck by the absence of any kind of services or people. If you want to use the internet, it´s $5.00 for 15 minutes. Breakfast is not included with the price of the hotel. If you want the evening meal it´s $15 or a la cart. Soup is $6.00, however. I was charged almost $90 to spend one lonely night there with a bowl of soup. The rates posted are deceiving. I think if you go with a group and don´t mind the prices, it can be an interesting place. Perhaps there is more attention when there are more people. There are bird watching and plant tours for $65.00. You can walk the grounds to the waterfalls for nothing. You do have to sign a form that says you will not sue if anything happens to you. It was a little disconcerting.
