“Go hungry, esp. if you choose the tasting menu”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 10, 2012

Four of us put ourselves in the hands of the chef, choosing the $47 tasting menu. We also opted for the $16 wine pairing. All of us (who suffered from food coma for two days after) agreed that everything was extraordinary. Even the first course...grilled octopus...which my husband normally wouldn't touch, was eaten with relish. We left well sated, and agree we will definitely go back. But first, we will fast....and not order cocktails or eat the yummy bread. By the way, you can make reservations online, they reply promptly.

“Good service, not outstanding food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 1, 2012

It was easy to make a reservation, for my friends was slightly difficult to get there. The food was very good but not excellent, the place is well decorated and the service was very good also.

“Overpriced / Average food / Stiff atmosphere”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2012

Three of us went in November 2011 , we all asked for the 5 course " meñu de degustación " and all of us agreed that it was just OK , not one of the 5 courses was anything special , it was a Tuesday night and we were the only ones there... AND service was slow !!!! , wine was expensive ( is that becuase it is listed on an I PAD ) and the background music out of sync with the expected ambience of the place , however friends have told me good things about ALMA so maybe just dont go on a Tuesday night ....

“Hidden gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 7, 2012

We celebrated my daughter's boyfriend's birthday here; European friends referred us. He is from Quito and was unfamiliar with Alma, so we were excited to introduce him. We started with shrimp and calamari plus the tuna appetizers, we wouldn't let them remove the plates till we had cleaned them, delicious. Each of us ordered something different, their "new" gourmet burger, steak and the homemade wild mushroom agnolotti. The flavors and quality were excellent, but the pasta dish was so tasty and different everyone wanted a bite. Unfortunately we didn't have room for desert!

“Great place if you want to entertain, food is okay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 28, 2012

We had a three course dinner with the palate cleansers in between, service is excellent, food so so, the filet mignon we had was quite generous but a bit too thick so the consistency of texture varies, I believe it's more elegant if they would cut it in slices so we can judge the meat's cooked gradient.

I believe your service is managed by the owners so that's not a problem, we were really happy with the service overall, attentive and well coordinated. Perhaps, yes, the banter was missing, but again I was with guests so that wasn't necessary.

Do consider going to Alma, as one of the hotter spots in Quito, the neighborhood is super safe and it has the charm that there is only one way to get there, no alternate directions.

Oh, yeah, and perfect command of English with the owners, so you can let them what and how you want it.
