Forgot to mention in a previous review that as part of Gate! Travel tour to Ecuador. We visited the Center of the World Monument outside of Quito. It is the exact latitude and longitude of the world at 0' 00". There is a large stone monument and globe at the top with
generous walkways and gardens nearby. Also in the area are small restaurants and gift
shops tastefully done.

I booked my Quito City tour with Middle of the Earth and the Otavalo market over the internet from two different websites ( viator and city-discovery ) and guess what, I both ended up with Grayline. I had mixed feelings at first because of the reviews here in this site but luckily i never experienced anything horrible.

1) Hotel pick up time. I emailed the company on the day of the tour itself, giving them all my booking and reference number. They emailed me back quickly telling me that they will not know what's the exact time until later in the afternoon and that they would call me at my hotel. I told them that I'm out of the hotel most of the time and that email is the quickest way to let me know. And for sure, later in the afternoon, I got the email for the pick up time.

2) Actual Pick up time: Otavalo Market Tour - Punctual. City tour - Punctual. Although some other clients in my group were picked up late but this is because of the Quito 21K run happening that day in which most of the streets are closed.

3) Guide - First class. We got the most knowledgeable and hospitable guide ever by the name of Esteban. He knows a lot of information and history of the city and the tour. He even added some interesting stuff and stops on the tour not mentioned in the itinerary - though i don't know if this is part of their 'script' or not. Went above and beyond satisfying trivial requests like asking him whats the closest church to our hotel and what time are the services, checking with the company what is the pick up time for our scheduled tour the next day, buying some Ecuadorian fruits and street meals and letting us try them. Overall quite satisfied for the professionalism.

4) Size of our tour. Around 8 people which is a good size.

Try to avoid taking the City tour on a Sunday though as the churches are closed for services.

My boyfriend and I booked Greyline's Saturday Otavalo Market tour through viator.com nearly a week before the actual tour date. When we booked the tour we were informed that we had to contact Greyline to arrange the exact time for hotel pickup. On the Sunday before travel we began emailing the company to arrange hotel pickup. We received no response. We followed up again on Wednesday to arrange for hotel pickup. It wasn't until Thursday evening that the company emailed us back saying that they would let us know by Friday at 6:00 pm of the pickup time. Guess what? Friday at 6:00 pm we still hadn't received a response. In fact, it wasn't until well after midnight that we received a pickup time from the company (note, we didn't see the email until after we had awakened Saturday morning). The email indicated that hotel pickup was supposed to be at 7:40 that morning. We quickly got ready, and headed to the lobby to wait on the driver and guide.

Long story short, the guide didn't arrive at the hotel until 8:36 am - 56 MINUTES LATE!!! We emailed Greyline numerous times that morning to determine the status, and only once did they respond. I think they told us the guide was in a "car accident." However, by the end of the day we had heard three different explanations: car accident, traffic, and flat tire. Not sure what story or combination of stories was true.

Because the guide was so late we, of course, didn't have time to complete the entire itinerary. We completely skipped Peguche, which left me extremely disappointed.

I will NEVER use this company again. They're extremely unprofessional and lack necessary customer service skills.

Gray Line probably benefits disproportionately from brand recognition but the company lived up to its name in Quito, Ecuador. Organized tours in some of the South American cities that are not exactly overrun by tourists can be extremely private affairs, with only a few other guests sharing a spacious tourist van, which is to your benefit. Who wants to listen to a guide over a PA system in a big tour bus packed with tourists, though that's exactly what Gray Line tours in the big European cities are.

We ordered Gray Line the night before and were quoted a very reasonable $40 per person for a six-hour tour of the city including a drive to the equator with a leisurely lunch (not included) at one of the many restaurants at the destination. They were about 45 minutes late and with no way to contact them, we started looking into another tour. But just as we were ready to order, the guide showed up in the hotel lobby. We were sharing a huge Mercedes van with just two other people, a couple from Sao Paulo, Brazil. Our guide, whose name escapes me because I am writing this after a month, was very knowledgeable about the history and culture of Ecuador. We even asked him and the driver to join us for lunch which gave us the time to talk about non-touristy topics as well. The equator was quite interesting, though I personally had a hard time believing some of the folklore passed off as historical "facts." But that's what makes tourism fun - a lot of truths enriched with a little bit of Ripley's Believe it or Not.

Although most of the historical sights of Quito are concentrated in a relatively small Old Town, there are two very good reasons to take a guided tour in a van - one, the hilly streets of Quito especially with the city's dizzying 7,500 ft. altitude are not very walker friendly and two, a good guide makes the same sights so much more meaningful. Gray Line has our vote...again.

we did 3 tours with gray line recently. Otavalo and Cotacachi was a long but great day and excellent guide. City tour is excellent and our guide was fantastic, she loved her job. Cotapaxi trip was good but wish we had a vehicle to go up to the refuge or base of the volcanoe. Recommend private tour for cotapaxi with a jeep or 4 wheel. Other than that Gray line and the guides are first class. Thank you!!
