Portobello is a beautiful, typical Valparaiso style house. It is clean and the host and hostess are very accommodating (maps, recommendations, breakfast, FYI mostly Spanish speaking). The neighborhood is few blocks outside the main street but is safe with a couple of great restaurants. I would definitely recommend this hostal to singles or couples with a few days to spend in this interesting town.

Room Tip: Our room was called "Burdeo"; big, clean, private bath and gorgeous view, but a little noisy.

We shortened our stay here due to the terrible room we were assigned. We were given a room at the back of the hotel that didn't have a window that could be opened. Wouldn't stay here again. Seems that the good reviews come from the apartments with the sea views. We had a private bathroom that was detached from the room and down the hall. Not a pleasant stay. Breakfast good.

We stayed here for 12 days and loved it.
What worked well for us:
The owners are just delightful. Even though they don’t speak much English they go out of their way to pass on information or to help.
The breakfast of fruit salad, fresh rolls, cheese, cold meats, juice, coffee and tea is great.
My extremely fussy daughter didn’t want to eat anything and every day they tried to put something new on the table for her -chocolate chip cookies one day, strawberries the next, etc. I don’t expect people to accommodate her and was completely bowled over by their efforts.
The shared kitchen is as clean as a pin.
The room is large, the bed is comfortable.
The water was hot all day long.
The internet was super fast and reliable.
And again, the owners go out of their way to help you and are friendly and easy going. An absolute pleasure to stay with them.

What could be improved:
Our room was on the ground floor so tended to be a bit noisy - we could hear the people walking on the second floor as well as people shouting in the street.
The area isn’t too nice - a bit shabby with a lot of litter on the streets.
The bedroom door is made of coloured glass - so we were disturbed by people coming home late and turning on the hall or dining room lights.
There is no hanging space for your clothes and only one bedside table.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the top floor- they have a great view

What we liked best on this hotel/hostel was the view. It overlooks the entire harbor and nearly the entire city. Just around the corner is the funicular Artilleria. Here one should necessarily be driven up times. It also has a restaurant with fantastic food, friendly english-speaking service and incredible views in the vicinity - Casa Cuatro Vientos.
One does not speak Spanish to communicate with the owners is difficult because they are also limited on-site. The room is adequate and comfortable. Unfortunately it has not been cleaned for a stay of two nights.
Please note, the bill must be paid in cash. Taxis can be hard to reach the hotel. Generally, the hotel is in a rather questionable area, which during the day is not a problem.

Room Tip: we had the purpel room, with great view
