“Good location, friendly staff BUT...”
Reviewed April 2, 2014

I wanted to like this hotel very much. I really did. It’s a grand mansion set atop Valparaiso and the staff were nice and helpful, the location was excellent, but somehow it didn’t deliver.
Maybe it was the bathroom – a very small bathroom. I am 53 kilos and 157cm tall and I could hardly fit in it. The shower was so small that when I closed the shower screen – I could actually feel it against me.
The hot water took about 10 minutes to arrive and we only had one toilet paper roll. We asked the receptionist for another roll when it ran out but because it was night time – he didn’t know where they were kept.
Or maybe it was my lack of sleep due to the gap on top of our bedroom door that lets the lights in from the corridors (I did look for the light switches and turn them off one by one). Alas, there was nothing I could do about the light that was streaming from the street lamp.
Then in the morning the noise from the dining room (moving tables and chairs) woke us up closely followed by loud radio playing. I guess it was these details that made my stay here quite uncomfortable.

We spent three nights at the Gran Hotel Gervasoni and found it an excellent choice of hotel for Valparaiso. It is in a perfect location for exploring the Cerro Concepción and the Cerro Alegre and is in walking distance of many great restaurants, bars, shops, etc. The Ascensor Concepción is right on your doorstep to get down to the main part of the city. The hotel is certainly a quirky building with character, perched on the side of the hill and therefore on many levels, the rooms all being different from each other. We had a lovely room with a small balcony and window overlooking the city and the harbour, the bathroom was on the level below. The room was very attractively decorated, the bed was comfortable and, despite being on the main floor of the hotel the room was not at all noisy. We really enjoyed the view from the room although the balcony was not large enough to use.

We found the reception staff friendly and helpful, a parking space was found for our car right outside the hotel, the breakfast waiter was extremely attentive and the owner of the hotel, who was around most of the time, was charming and gracious.

Breakfast had a great selection of fruit, good eggs that were replenished frequently and the usual breads, meats and cheeses. Coffee was not the best but there was an espresso machine as well. We did not eat in the restaurant as there were so many others close by to try. Overall it was a very pleasant stay.

Would definitely recommend, the hotel is a historical mansion at a perfect location next to the city elevator. There is a lovely terrace to have breakfast, lunch or drinks, you got to love this place!

The hotel is located in the historic part of Valparaiso. Our room was on the second floor which required a climb on a steep staircase. The room was spacious but the furniture were rather drab and very few amenities were included. Breakfast was very poor with limited choices and terrible coffee. The wait staff was indifferent and requests were ignored. On a positive note, there are many wonderful restaurants within walking distance and we enjoyed three of them.

Room Tip: Get a room with an unobstructed view of the sea.

This hotel is a heritage building which is why you would stay here. You probably won't stay anywhere else like it! The great thing about the hotel is that has a big terrace and an attached restaurant, so you can be lazy if you like. Our room had a sweet balcony facing the port. We loved the high ceilings and always being greeted by staff at the front door. The hotel provides a warm welcome to discovering old Valparaiso.

Room Tip: request a balcony

The hotel is really fascinating and gives the feeling that it is almost untouched since it was built in the late 19th century.
If you have walking difficulties, this is probably not for you. The rooms are spread over a number of floors which are accessed by steep wooden stairs. There are no lifts! Our friends had a large room in which there was just a table and chairs - the bed was on a mezzanine level accessed by a narrow staircase. Our room was just below and had twin beds with very little room to walk around but it had a lovely little balcony. It had a very small shower room with toilet and wash basin.
Breakfast was fairly basic but taken in a pleasant room overlooking the harbour, or on the terrace. We ate in the restaurant once. The food was good but did take a little while to come however, as we were with friends, this didn't matter. Not the sort of place for a quick meal.

Room Tip: When booking, check what the room facilities are as there are vast differences.

While visiting Chile I decided to spend one night in Valparaiso as I've heard wonderful things about the place. It decidedly met my expectations. And the hotel I stayed in, the Gervasoni, was a beautiful place to stay with wonderful views and very cozy accommodations. The location was ideal as it was very close to lovely restaurants and streets that were nice to walk around. The bed was very comfortable and the room was very clean. The only reason for not giving it an "excellent" was because the service at times was inconsistent. The receptionist who welcome us was just fine and her helpfulness had limits. The very next day another receptionist who was French [forgot her name] was very friendly and helpful. Overall, a great value and would stay there again when back in lovely Valparaiso!

The Hotel is the fruit of lengthy restoration work to recover one of the homes of greatest cultural value in the hills of Valparaiso, measuring more than 11,000 square feet. This house was built by European immigrants circa 1870. The imposing building, now transformed into a boutique hotel, uniquely portrays, through its welcoming setting, the lifestyles of the generations of families that lived on the hill. The house’s architecture takes you back in time to the mode of life at the end of the 19th century. Luxury refurbishings concordant to the comforts of a five-star hotel interweave discreetly throughout the patrimonial air in the house, creating just the right cross between tradition and modernness. ... more   less
