Owner description: "Pay What You Want" Walking Tours Everyday of the week at 10am and 3pm in Valparaíso, Chile. We meet at Plaza Sotomayor every day of the week. Our guides wear red and white striped t-shirts like the children's book 'Where is Wally' or 'Where's Waldo' on some countries, so it is easy to find us. The tour is a 2,5 hour highlights walk through the city.

What a great walking tour! Our guide francisco was born in Valparaiso and knows everything there is to know about the city. He obviously loves where he lives and it shows. We got to see all the cool sights you might miss, such amazing grafitti! We also got to take a ride on a tram, the elevator trains up the hill, try an alfajor (traditional cake) and a free pisco sour. After the tour francisco sat down with us and a map and told us loads of cool local restaurants and bars to check out - unfortunately we were leaving that afternoon so we didn't get to try them all. A must do when in Valparaiso!

“Thorough Tour, Instills Understand and Appreciation of Valpo”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 18, 2012

I wish that I could give this tour 6 stars. Our guide was named Francisco and a native Porteno. Having a local take us around was great. He showed us the art and history and the feel of his city, interspersing his personal views with great historical anecdotes. Like did you know that the US and Chile were on the brink of war over a hundred years ago? He really impresses upon you not only the uniqueness of the place, but the resilience and spunk of the people who live there. Everything is on the surface and he is not ashamed to show you the flaws and negative aspects of his place, but it all adds up to the character of Valparaiso.

There is a lot of walking, and some parts of the city are quite steep, so be prepared for that. Sometimes some of his jokes come out a bit flat, even though his English is good sometimes humor doesn't translate perfectly, but by the end it's kind of charming. At the end of the tour he will give you recommendations on places to visit or dine at during your stay, and I feel that this tour gave us a comprehensive overview of the city, which I have to say is one of my favorite places in the world.

At the end you pay what you feel comfortable paying, the guide isn't pushy and in fact leaves his backpack, so he doesn't know who has given him what. We got to go on several attractions that you have to pay for (a trollebus, an acensore) and your guide pays for you without bringing attention to it. Our group of four left 10.000, so 2.500 (around $5 USD) a person.

Great walking tour of Valpo. Guides were knowledgeable and funny and clearly love their city. Was a really fun 3 hours. Appropriate for all fitness levels. Tour is free but you tip at the end proportional to how good you thought the tour was.

“Beautifully simple, fun and a must in Valpo”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 21, 2012

The guide Chris was a very upbeat, funny and knowledgeable guide. Took us round some great places, up some steps and down some 'acensors'. The trip finished on a short bus ride and a freshly prepared surprise! Do it you won't regret it.
