“Quirky, friendly place”
Reviewed December 26, 2012

A relaxed, oddball hostel run by a very friendly English-speaking artistic couple - they've put a lot of work into the decor, which is kinda wacky but fun to wake up to! A nice old building with plenty of character. Great place to chill - thankfully free of partying Gap Yah types. Also easy walking distance from both the bus station (5 mins) and the tourist areas round Cerro Alegre (15 mins) - the hostels up there might be on prettier streets, but they're a long way to haul your rucksack from the bus station! Also there's a good kitchen which is open to guests. Misses out on five stars only because the lounge, while cosy and comfy, is quite small, and the breakfast is ok but not great (you just get a roll - no eggs or yogurt).

Room Tip: The twin room is very good value!

Walking distance from the bus station and everything you need. Great kitchen with everything to prepare a good meal, clean bathroom and hot water in the shower, small dorm (just 6 beds) and nice commun area to eat, listening tv or use the computer.
Special thanks to the owner who have been reeeally nice with me after my camera get robbed in a other hostel. They are awesome!!

This hostel is walking distance from the bus station, which is a plus, and transportation around Valparaiso was pretty cheap using shared taxis. The hostel was friendly with a big shared tv and a nice kitchen. However it was the typical hostel, with just an okay bathroom (if you go for a shared bathroom you need to use the bathroom upstairs) and okay cleanliness. I gad a lot of bug bites that night but the jury is still out on whether there were bed bugs or I just got them from walking around a coastal city at twilight, this was winter though, so outside bugs seem less likely. The breakfast was very good, with choices of tea or instant coffee, marraqueta and cereal. Overall I would say it was worth the price, it's a bit cheaper then many places you could stay at, but it also feels cheaper. You get what you pay for.

Staying 4 nights in Valparaiso I found the Valpackers in the Avenida Francia to be a great base for discovering one of the most interesting cities in South America. While located a bit away, but in walking distance of touristical spots (10 minutes to the centro), it is very close to lively main streets as Pedro Montt & Av Brasil, also very close to the bus terminal or the bus/collectivo station which takes you up to La Sebastiana ... which is just as important to me

Further stray observations:
- The house is pretty old – to me, this is great, but don't expect central heating for example. Allover nicely decorated and has in general lots of charm. Rooms, bathroom & kitchen appeared all to be very clean.
- The double room was a bit too small, not much space in there, the dorm I stayed in the other nights however was very spacious.
- Breakfast itself was nothing special, but definitively enough for everybody around...
- Karen & José, the two owners who also live in the hostel were lovely people, had quite a few nice chats with them ... and also very obliging, they helped were they could & even showed me around a bit in Valparaiso.

Just spent 3 nights and it ranks as one of our worst hostel stays:

1. Left waiting for 30 mins outside for the person to answer the door when we arrived after a long bus journey and heavy bags. No apology. Really strange exchange left us asking if they even worked there which after a while they confirmed and led us to the room.

2. We were given the wrong key for the room and only discovered when we returned back from an evening meal. No staff were in the building. No response to the email we sent nor any answer on the mobile phone number. After 1.5 hours of trying to contact someone we found the spare key box – keys for all rooms that had been left unlocked (there was a padlock, just not secured).

3. Breakfast was scant and each portion measured out i.e. 1 slice of cheese per person. Didn’t happen to us but would hate to arrive late when someone has taken 2 slices!

4. Old building so no sound proofing, creaky floorboards and slanty floors

5. Hardly anyone stayed here and we rarely saw any staff so just like renting an apartment rather than being in a hostel

6. Located out of the main tourist area.

I feel really sorry, you felt your staying was so terrible to warning another people you stay with us.
when you say I give you the wrong key I really apologize because I said to you I have to go out.
because I was moving out to that house, so I think I was distracted and tired, really sorry for that.
Breakfast here is: cereal, milk, coffee in grain, tea, bread, butter, jam and cheese..
when you talks about our breakfast sound really awful.
and yes, is an old house, this house is more than 110 years, so when you walk under your feet sometimes floor sound like creaking, anyway is in the descrption of the hostel the same is for the location, we are in the center of the city not in the turist area.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for two nights. We booked a standard double but got a basic double although it didn't really matter. The location was pretty good, we just caught the metro (really close and cheap) into the main part of Valpo and it was quiet at night. The owners are friendly and give great tips, despite sounding scary through the signs around the place (can't use the facilities until you check in, have to pay 4,500 pesos just to use the facilities after check out, kitchen closes at 10). The room was clean and bed was comfortable, though the bathroom always smelt damp and dinghy. The lounge area was small (and no couch) but adequate and the breakfast is good (cereal, really nice ham and cheese toasties). We preferred Viña del Mar to Valpo because of the beach and it didn't seem as dodgy but we did have a good time at Casabella and met some great travellers there.

This was my first hostel stay in Valpo. Location is pretty ideal if you're a runner - just take Avd. Francia towards the water and there's a path along the coast. It's also crazy close to the bus terminal and central market. A short walk away from the plaza and Concepcion. The owner is incredibly helpful (the most detailed suggestions I've ever received from 'anyone' while staying at a hostel) - there was a guy there as well, Bobby, who gave us some great tips about the city and the neighboring beach, Reñaca (a 450CLP, 40min bus ride away). Bathroom on the second floor has a strong clean industrial smell and our room was the same... but minor details that had no bearing on our overall experience :)

Room Tip: I think all rooms face the street so the top floor 'might' be quieter but only if you leave...
