“Rustic Cool on a Cliff”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 15, 2013

True to what other travelers have said, the Fauna is cutting edge eco-stylish. Were I just 30 years younger, I would have thought it was very cool. However, it's a bit too cool for my pensioner demographic. The restaurant's lovely balcony terrace was crowded every evening with young revelers chain-smoking their lungs out. Hotel's best features were 1) very comfortable bedding, 2) wonderful breakfasts served on a terrace with impressive views. 3) friendly pleasant helpful staff, 4) good location, 5) clean & functional facility. Downside: Standard rooms are dark, too far down too many flights of stairs, and overlook noisy construction and other undesirable sights. Upgraded rooms much better, with pleasant view. As everywhere we went in Chile, the people were lovely and accommodating.

Room Tip: Go for the premium priced room. It's well worth it.

We appreciate your opinion and want to inform the poeple that we are growing: The hotel will count 9 more rooms, all well exposed and a bigger and panoramic terrace where our hosts will be able to share place with the locals. We will be as well reparing and reforcing actual rooms, specially their isolation.
Cordialmente,
Javier Alonso A.

We had 2 nights here. The room we were allocated the first night was down 2 flights of stairs. The room was very dark, and the only window was small and looked out to another wall of the hotel (and our neighbour's bathroom). The room was stylish in a minimalist way - e.g. no wardrobe, very little bench space and no TV or A.C.. The room was hot, airless and noisy, with people seemingly running up and down stairs all night and slamming doors.....we were NOT happy campers!!

Upon request, the next day we were moved to a room on a higher level, with a FANTASTIC view over beautiful Valparaiso. Suddenly all was OK with the world!! This room was quieter, had a wardrobe and a delightful breeze through the window. No longer was a TV missed, I could have stood looking at the views forever.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view.

However, we would like you to know Fauna had change structurally. This had growth 2 times his size. Now there are 15 rooms and the terrace roof had expanded offering beautifull and amazing views. Our service had improve in all the ways.

We hope you can come back to Valapraíso and stay again on Fauna.

We arrived early in the morning from a cruise ship, the taxi took us most of the way there - it is a steep walk up hill but so is most of Santiago. There was a short walk on level ground to the hotel which is in a very pleasant area. At first I walked past the hotel door - the building looked too small to be a hotel but that is misleading because the building goes down from the street over the cliff. We were too early for our rooms but the host was very hospitable and stored our luggage in a secure location and saw we had coffee and a place to sit while he helped us plan a walking tour of the town. Our room was several flights down (there is no elevator) well away from any noise of the restaurant bar. The room was modern and unique ( one wall showed the stone of the cliff) the toilet was ultramodern with a stone basin. The room was quite delightful and quiet.

The breakfast that was served in the moring was more than a normal continental breakfast and was served on the balcony overlooking the city and the bay. We decided to have supper in the hotel and again that was excellent - another tourist had taken a taxi to another restaurant the night before and decided the food in the hotel was better and their was no need to pay a taxi fare.

All in all, an excellent hotel.

My cautions would be - there are a lot of stairs - but they do help you with your luggage and Valparaiso has more hills and cliffs of any city I have seen. If you are on the top floor, it could be noisy - so ask for a lower room.

Room Tip: Lower rooms would have less chance of noise from the restaurant bar

The longer I stayed, the more I enjoyed Hotel Fauna. At first the minor drawbacks are apparent: the rooms are not exactly luxurious, there is no safety box and no AC. And since the building is quite old you hear everyone come in and out of their rooms and you know who's taking a shower at what time.

But these details are quickly overcome by the great aspects of Fauna: the staff and service is great, the breakfast on the beautiful terrace is amazing, the location could not be better next to most good restaurants in Valparaiso. The bed is very comfortable and the bathroom very clean. And if you have a room with a view like we did, it's quite an experience to wake up and open your curtains to the beauty of Valparaiso.

All in all, this is not the perfect hotel but it is very charming and as long as you're OK with its minor drawbacks, you will not regret choosing it.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for the view, it's worth it.

From the moment my husband and I arrived after an amazing 21 day cruise to the Antarctic, we were enthralled by Hotel Fauna. The property is interesting, the location perfect to absorb the city's ambiance, and the staff helped us in many ways. For example, contacting the best taxi drivers and seeing that we were picked up on time, and contacting a guide to transport us to the airport in Santiago, giving a several hour tour of Santiago prior to our departure.
The guest room was very comfortable and the restaurant was a great feature for us. Good food, served with care. We stayed three nights...and wished for more.

Room Tip: Our room was very, very pleasant. No. 5. I did not see others.

The Fauna is in a fabulous location. In one direction, it's steps away from a funicular that for 20 cents takes you right into the middle of downtown. In the other direction, there are several excellent restaurants and a small store for buying bottled water and other basics. The view of the city from the dining room (and certain rooms) is absolutely fabulous. However, the rooms are truly minimalist. Bed, wardrobe, couch, toilet, sink, and shower. That's it. Reminded me of a monastery. The breakfast, while good, took FOREVER. The first morning, it probably took an hour. The woman serving it insists on bringing out the several different courses in the same order, at her own pace -- which meant waiting for coffee at least 20 minutes (meanwhile being served juice and some other things, but I NEED coffee first thing in the morning. It was impossible to make this happen). The front desk guy tried to speed things up, but breakfast never took less than 30 or 40 minutes. If you're hurrying out to do something, take this into account!

Room Tip: Ask for a view. Some people in the hotel were laughing about what a terrible view they had.
