Valparaiso is so cool, so different, so warm (hot even). My son is living there for the year and through a friend of a friend found this boutique hotel for us to stay at during our visit. He did real well. If you are looking for Hyatt or Hilton, don't go to Valpo at all. But if you want an authentic experience of being a welcome traveler with something to learn and something to share, go here.
Like all of the interesting places in Valpo, it is on a hill, so bring your comfortable walking shoes and pack light. The rooms are gorgeous in an antique sort-of way, Most doors close, TV kinda works (but why would you come here to watch TV?), most lights work, and the door lock is just to keep it from rattling in the wind. When closed, the windows did a surprisingly good job of filtering the blaring music, car alarms (people trigger the motion sensor just for fun), and taxis rushing up the cobblestone street. We slept great. The room was small, but thankfully I was wearing shoes ever time I stubbed my toe on an angle or step (lots of them). My son (taller than I) hit is head on the bathroom door frame. In other words, the theme is 'just good enough', but the charming character and delightful hosts are the real reason for being there. Just ask a simple question and an hour later you have made a life-long friend as you struggle with each other's languages. Staying in Valpo for New Year's Eve was an experience and our room gave a nice perch to watch the street celebration. Oh, and it is walking distance, or a short 'Micro' bus ride to everything you might need.

Room Tip: We had a room on the street. Nice view, and just closed the windows to lock out the street noise.

This is a nice hostel with reasonable prices. I stayed in the shared dorm room with bunk beds, and have only every traveled with friends or family, where we had the room to ourselves. I found the beds to be warm and comfortable. Breakfast is included, it certainly won't fill you up but it's a nice addition.

Very friendly, educated and helpful owners and workers - taking care about the hostal and guests, giving advices concerning places worthy to see, Fine breakfasts are included in price of the room. It was a little bit cold in room during winter. Hostal "Sunflowers" (the name from van Gogh's painitng) is located in the center of the old part of Valpo, in a historical, well-preserved building and it is easy to recognize because of graffiti painted by Theo himself :)

Arrived Thursday. Had a 2m by 3m room that had been renovated. They had put a 1m by 1.5m ensuite in the room with an extra bed on top - the ladder came into the space that you enter the room. 3 sides of the double bed were inaccessible. The noise from the street (dogs, people, cars etc.) kept us awake most of the night. On the Friday they heard our grievances and we were moved into a much bigger room downstairs. All Friday night people were coming and going, ringing the door bell looking for a room, and the floor boards and walls were paper thin. On the Saturday the hostal was fully booked - but the majority of guests were in party mode and had no concern for anyone else. I don't think there were any house rules to consider other guests. I figured the hostal was quiet for a total of 1 hour on Saturday night/Sunday morning. The whole place needs serious renovation and steam cleaning. Oh, and the cat that roamed around the breakfast area..

All ok except the service - we came in for breakfast 5 minutes before it ends and were refused to be served breakfast. They also charge you for keeping your backpacks on the day of checkout.
