I picked out Sutherland House from the tripadvisor reviews and it lived up entirely to its reputation. Nothing fancy here. But a beautiful home turned B and B, outstanding views, comfortable, but small, rooms, and friendly and responsive service. Convenient location and excellent breakfast. I would definitely return.

The views from Sutherland House take in all of Valparaiso, Vina del Mar and far beyond -- truly amazing views! The owner and staff are genuinely helpful, our corner room on the top floor was clean and spacious and inviting, the location is ideal, and Sutherland House deservedly prides itself on serving full-bodied coffee (no Sanka!) and a delicious assortment of sweet and savory items at breakfast. Do be prepared to climb a LOT of stairs, perhaps with your luggage (the owner and staff will gladly help if asked or if they see you) and know in advance that the tub/shower has a slippery and deeply sloping floor that makes bathing somewhat risky, particularly for older guests; no bathtub mat or other non-friction surface was available, and on this issue the owner was curiously unwilling to help. It is on balance quite a gem, however, and a wonderful place to stay if you are visiting Valparaiso.

This hotel offers great views over the city and the bay. But to get to these views you have to walk a lot of stairs, first to get to the front door and then to the room. We stayed on the top floor in the corner room so that ment negotiating the narrow stair with our luggage. On the other hand, the staff and the owner helped us carrying our stuff upstairs. And if you come to valparaiso, you must be prepared to walk a lot up and down hill.......
And yes, the room was not big but very clean, nicely decorated and we had a little table and two chairs in de corner so we could enjoy the views perfectly! We didn't mis an airco because you can open enough windows to get a nice fresh breeze.
We stayed here for two nights, during the weekend. The hotel is away from the busy streets and up high so more quiet then it usual is in a city in a weekend.
The staff is very helpful and the owner knows a lot about the history of Valparaiso and loves sharing that with his guests. Breakfast is just a bit more than adequate. They serve fresh fruit, eggs and good coffee. And the possibility to eat on the balcony, in the sun, overlooking the bay.
We travel on two motorbikes and we could park them safely in the garden of the owner, just around the corner. Great service!

Room Tip: I think all rooms are on the front and/or with a view. Room 303 is the corner room on the top floor, matrimonial and with great view to front and site.

Sutherland House is a great hotel, though some features make it a poor choice for some visitors--especially the elderly.

Pros:

--Recently renovated, well-kept, furniture and fixtures are comfortable and high-quality.

--Friendly, accessible owner & helpful reception will really go the extra mile. They happily helped us to make dinner reservations as well as schedule tours, activities, etc. They even helped us make reservations for our next destination.

--The upstairs rooms have wonderful views of the city and the harbor. Valparaiso is a big, hectic city, so it's a treat to relax by the window with a glass of wine and take it all in from the peace & quiet of your room.

--Good location. It's on Cerro Alegre, just outside the main shopping/hotel hub, but an easy walk to lots of great restaurants, many of the best museums and sites.

--Good breakfast. Eggs to order, espresso coffee (this was a rarity in Chile & much appreciated), tasty sweets, toast & some savory options as well (tomato slices topped with mozzarella).

Cons:

--Stairs. Those third floor room are great, but there's no elevator & the last flight of stairs is narrow. If walking up and down two flights of stairs several times a day is going to be an issue for you...well, maybe you don't want to visit Valparaiso (the city is very hilly, which means lots of stairs).

--Bathtubs. The rooms are on the small side, the bathrooms especially. The sink, toilet & bathtub/shower are crammed right up against one another and the bathtubs are much smaller than the standard size. It's a little tricky to get in and out without slipping, and it's a cramped space to shower in. The owner appeared completely uninterested in obtaining bath mats to help older guests keep stable in the tight quarters of the shower.

On the whole, Sutherland House was quiet and old-fashioned, genteel and elegant rather than hip or modern.

Room Tip: Third floor rooms have excellent views of the city.

The owners are just lovely, great attention. The room and the view were perfect, and its location is excellent.

We like to recommend it, if you're interested in hosting at Cerro Alegre in Valparaiso, this is the place. A 15 minutes walk near to good restaurants, Neruda house among other attractions.
