We stayed in the Hotel Da Vinci as a party of three, and our positive experience started almost as soon as we walked through the door. One of our party was partially disabled, and it turned out our double room was on the 2nd floor. As soon as this became apparent (and before anyone had time to discuss feasibility) the part-owner Enrico proposed changing to a ground-floor room. This even turned out to be cheaper!
We enjoyed staying here, and in particular enjoyed the attention we received from Enrico. As he said "he is Italian - talking is in his DNA" and he obviously enjoys it. He, and his staff, were very friendly and helpful - even offering to provide breakfast on the ground floor if required, and going well out of their way to track down and enquire as to the status of a specific restaurant. However the breakfast room on the 3rd floor is well worth climbing for, and we had good breakfasts there on both mornings.
To my mind, the "fire trap" comment is ridiculous - the hotel is as good in this regard as any other mid-range Chilean hotel. We actually commented on how high the ceilings in our room and bathroom were! The rooms we took had good showers and plenty of hot water, too; and we were also appreciative of the Pablo Neruda poem inscribed on our bedroom wall.
As our (amended) room fronted on to the street, we did get a little traffic noise; and on the first night the guests above us were audibly talking and walking on a wooden floor rather late. But these were minor issues which didn't spoil our stay.
Most hotels are content for guests who have checked out to leave luggage to be collected later; the Da Vinci surpassed this by offering us all the facilities of the hotel (apart from the bedrooms) for as long as we needed them. We enjoyed Valparaiso, found much of interest in the city, and could easily visit it again. If we did, we would certainly look to stay at the Da Vinci again.
