“A SPECIAL HOTEL IN AN INTERESTING CITY”
Reviewed April 14, 2014

We stayed in the Hotel Da Vinci as a party of three, and our positive experience started almost as soon as we walked through the door. One of our party was partially disabled, and it turned out our double room was on the 2nd floor. As soon as this became apparent (and before anyone had time to discuss feasibility) the part-owner Enrico proposed changing to a ground-floor room. This even turned out to be cheaper!

We enjoyed staying here, and in particular enjoyed the attention we received from Enrico. As he said "he is Italian - talking is in his DNA" and he obviously enjoys it. He, and his staff, were very friendly and helpful - even offering to provide breakfast on the ground floor if required, and going well out of their way to track down and enquire as to the status of a specific restaurant. However the breakfast room on the 3rd floor is well worth climbing for, and we had good breakfasts there on both mornings.

To my mind, the "fire trap" comment is ridiculous - the hotel is as good in this regard as any other mid-range Chilean hotel. We actually commented on how high the ceilings in our room and bathroom were! The rooms we took had good showers and plenty of hot water, too; and we were also appreciative of the Pablo Neruda poem inscribed on our bedroom wall.

As our (amended) room fronted on to the street, we did get a little traffic noise; and on the first night the guests above us were audibly talking and walking on a wooden floor rather late. But these were minor issues which didn't spoil our stay.

Most hotels are content for guests who have checked out to leave luggage to be collected later; the Da Vinci surpassed this by offering us all the facilities of the hotel (apart from the bedrooms) for as long as we needed them. We enjoyed Valparaiso, found much of interest in the city, and could easily visit it again. If we did, we would certainly look to stay at the Da Vinci again.

My wife and I stayed an extra day in Valparaiso after disembarking the Crown Princess on 3/20/2014 as we were celebrating our 43rd wedding anniversary the following day. In advance of our stay, the staff at Da Vinci secured a private tour booking for us, provided directions to the hotel, and advice regarding local transportation from the cruise port terminal. This alone saved us almost half the the cost of an outstanding meal we had the evening of our stay at the Hotel. As many others have said in reviews on this property, the owner, Enrico, was a gem. He cooked us a wonderful breakfast that was included in this most economical rate. We had great conversation about the history of the area for the better part of two hours the following morning. You can stay in a 4 or 5 star property with pools, jacuzzis, fitness centers, etc; however, we found the experience of our stay in the Hotel Da Vinci was exceptional.

We stayed at the Hotel for 3 days in February 2014. The location is very convenient to many of the areas and transit in Valparaiso. The Metro station was just a few blocks down the hill towards the port so a trip to Vina Del Mar was super easy. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was OK. The bathroom was pretty small and could have used some updating. We enjoyed the breakfast and the nice airy breakfast/bar room on the upper level. Another neat feature was the self service bar (beer) on the second level. It was a nice space to hang out and plan where to go out for dinner after a day of sightseeing. The areas up the hill from the Hotel have some really nice art shops and restaurants that look out over the city and the ocean. One downside to the hotel was the noise. Our room was at street level so we heard the traffic. Not an all night thing, but when the morning trips to work started you could hear the cars rumble down the cobblestone.

Yes, this is the worst fire trap I have ever stayed in. But then the entire city is a fire trap. Can't believe how long this hotel has survived, and it has been a long time by the looks of the place. The ceiling in our bathroom was about 5'3", which was a problem for my 6' husband. The shower head was broken and sprayed the water all over the bathroom. The owner was aware of the problem, but claims he can not get decent fixtures. The beds are a horror! But the owner is funny and the help very nice. The breakfast was wonderful. The location is within easy walking distance of Plaza Santamayor, the banks and the port. If you are not catching a cruise ship, I can not understand why you would come here. The UNESCO world heritage site is not worthy of the name. They must have bribed someone. But I did not see anyplace better to stay, so steel up your sense of humor and enjoy the experience.

Room Tip: Do not rent the 2 beds on separate floors unless you are short and desperate. Just enough room on e...

Hotel da Vinci has a personal touch that you won't find in most hotels. The owner/manager, Enrico spent time chatting with guests at the exceptional in-hotel breakfast and at other times including when I arrived. Any of the counter staff I encountered were very friendly and helpful. One even offered to help out with working an atm when I was having difficulty getting money. The hotel itself is located in an ideal location beside the Fischer passage that makes it perfect for exploring the streets and art of Valparaiso.

My only complaint was the thin walls, but it wasn't a noisy place when I was there, and there are "silent please" signs in the room areas.

One other great feature of this hotel is the self-serve drinks area which provides water and hot drinks free-of-charge and an honor system cooler with beer, soda, and bottle water. Just take what you want and put it on the clipboard to pay for later.
