“11 nights in Luna Sonrisa”

Perhaps the best little hostel I have ever stayed in. Only 6 rooms, 5 doubles and a single, and a 5 bedded dorm room. All rooms a good size with very high ceilings making them feel very airy.
Hostel is always spotlessly clean and well maintained.
Excellent breakfast and a self catering kitchen.
2 lounge areas with comfortable seating.

Room Tip: All rooms are good. There is also an apartment availble.

We visited Luna Sonrisa after staying the previous night at Hostal Nomades down the street. It was like night and day. Sonrisa lacked the art, personality and funkiness of Nomades. It is located in the Cerro Alegre neighborhood, a few blocks away from Nomades. We were greeted by a friendly staff member who spoke English (she was originally from the US) and gave us a great map and recommendations of bars to go too - something that the older and less-English speaking staff at Nomades could do.

Our room was on the main floor and the first building when you walked in. The room was comfortable, but lacked the charm and personality of Nomades - white walls, and a bare white bathroom with a shower. Sleeping there, it was considerably noisier - our room was right on the street and by the front door - so not only did late visitors and early risers cause us to stir, but so did the weekday construction on the street. We also had a neighbor above us, which caused the old floorboards to creak and squeak whenever they moved around.

Breakfast was just okay, not my favorite of my trip to Chile - bland bread, a few different jams (I didn't get to try), tea and coffee, and some butter and cheeses. While this sounds well and good, it wasn't as tasty as others I had or would experience (Sorry, but Nomades had the best breakfast ever!).

Overall, a fine hostel if you're seeking simple accommodations and a more traditional hostel experience and you are younger. If you are a couple, opt else where perhaps - as the main floor bedroom is loud and lacks little in romance.

Room Tip: If you are seeking an en suite (a double with a private bathroom) either see if they have other opti...

I stayed for four nigths in the single room. The hostel is in a good location up on Cerro Alegre, and all of the staff I met were wonderfully friendly and helpful. There's a decent breakfast and excellent wifi plus you can also get washing done. The kitchen is fine to cook in if you want to do your own meals. All in all a lovely hostel, very calm and hospitable.

It is a bit noisy and in the rooms off the lounge, you can hear everything, even from down in the kitchen. A couple of rooms even had the pleasure of listening to a 'squeaking bed' from upstairs one night! Also, the blinds are great for letting the light in during the day, but it would be handy to have blackout curtains for the night! Still, it's fine if you have ear plugs and and eye mask!

The kitchens and bathrooms were a bit dated. Whilst clean, for example, the showers were a bit grim.

This hostel has superb breakfasts as the owners un a nice little bakery. Best breakfast in Chile. The hostel was a nice size and the rooms were lovely, and each had somewhere safe to store your belongings. There isn;t a curfew but the hostel try to make sure guests pipedown after 11pm, so if you're looking for a party house then this probably isn't your thing. The place was exceptionally clean and tidy, and the building itself was beautiful. Nice high ceilings and decorated nicely. Great wifi as well. Overall, probably one of the nicest places I've staying in Chile, and compliments the beauty of Valpariso nicely. Staff are helpful too and give you a little map or where's good to go out and where you should avoid.

I rolled up to Luna Sonrisa in my motorcycle hoping that I would have somewhere to park it, though doubtful. I was welcomed in by the friendly and helpful owner, Janak, who went out of his way and let me park it at his home not far away. Besides that, La Luna Sonrisa is a fabulous place to stay in Valpo. The location, ambiance, security, cleanliness, fantastic breakfast, helpful info on the city and for much of Chile... for all these reasons and more, I couldn't recommend a better place to stay in Valpo. Thank you again Janak for all your help!

La Luna Sunrisa is most probably the best hostel i've stayed at in terms of setting, character, cleanliness, security, breakfast (which is genuinely amazing with home-made jams and fresh brown bread), hot water, late check out and general ambience. The owner is a british guy who leaves nothing to chance. if there's something wrong he will fix it. In my opinion it's run as a hostel should be run and i have absolutely no reservation recommending it. The hostel is located in the hilly, trendy cerro alegre area. Although the area is pretty tranquil there's some great architecture, great restaurants and above all it's safe to walk around. The "pirates" (as the locals refer to them who live in the no-go areas) who pickpocket and mug down by the port don't venture into this part of Val'p so you can enjoy the area without constantly looking over your shoulder. (although you still need to be vigilante of course)

Room Tip: reserve in advance

Lovely, well-run, clean and spacious hostel. Massive house with big spacious rooms with high-ceilings. Breakfast was delicious and a great opportunity to meet fellow travellers. Homemade jam is particularly good! I recommend staying here, in the heart of the beautiful part of Valparaiso.
