Wow no words for this place. Unreal. We have 4 days left here and I will here everyday I have left. The best pork sandwich I have ever had. There are no words to describe what they do here with meat, bread and sauce...

Fuente Alemana is *the* sandwich place to go in Santiago. In a city full of such places, you can be spoilt for choice, but FA really does shine at the top. It can be pretty hectic fighting your way into there (I refer to their restaurant near Plaza Italia), but once you're in and perched on either a stool or standing around the edge, get your order in and wait for a great and traditional Chilean-style sandwich. The ladies that work tirelessly there prepare the food right in front of you, and are very flexible with the orders, adding and taking bits away. My vegetarian fiancé orders a grilled cheese sandwich with avocado, tomato and other additions, and they are happy to provide her something not on the menu. My favourite is their "speciality" sandwich - the "Rumano", which is actually a hamburger-style sandwich, with a touch of chile in the patty to give it some warmth; with grilled cheese and a glass of draft beer (they serve Cristal on tap here) it is incredible. Be sure to tip - the way to do it is 1. ask the lady for the bill 2. go to the cashier and pay 3. return with the bill (for proof you paid) and give it to her 4. identify the little box for your waitresses number and put your tip inside. Enjoy!

Well, if you are, visit Fuente Alemana. The restaurant is on thes south side of O'Higgins. The Tripadvisor maps puts the restaurant much further east of the actual location so simply go to the address 58 O'Higgins. The place was crowded when we arrived just after 2:30 pm. Don't worry and simply follow the following instructions:

1. Find a spot around the counter in the middle of the restaurant and if you're lucky, grab a seat (like my wife).
2. Take a look at the menu which is above the cashier located right of the door you used to enter the restaurant. Most people order lomo which is boiled pork and palta is avocado, I think. We ordered the most expensive sandwich (lomo, tomato, palta and mayo) for just under $10. Each additional item for a lomo sandwich is an extra dollar. Unless you like mayo, ask for only a little mayo.
3. Get the attention of one of the servers. They are the women with a number pinned to their uniform. The guys in beige simply assist the servers and typically don't take orders.
4. Once you get her attention, make your food and drink order.
5. You'll see her make your sandwich and then deliver it to you in about 5 minutes.
6. Once you're done, ask for your bill and then proceed to the cashier to pay.
7. Once you've paid, the cashier will stamp your bill and you can take it back to the server to give your tip or simply give a tip in the tip jar.

My wife and I split a sandwich since we were having dinner in a few hours. Unless you're really hungry, you might want to do the same.

Have fun experiencing a meal at a Santiago classic...

: )))))

If you visit Valdivia, I'd suggest you visit the Kunstman Brewery and Restaurant. It might surprise you but their sandwiches are even bigger then the ones at Fuente Alemana.

Awesome local place in Santiago that serves mouth watering belly bombs. Beef or pork, avocado, tomato, a mountain of mayo, salt, chili pepper, grilled cheese, bun. Holy cow. Ice cold stein of beer to wash it down. Must do in Chile
