The ambient was gorgeus but the food was average. The service is very poor, there were two waiters with not a good mood...The wine list was weak too.

If by the end of the night you are pleasantly surprised, then the restaurant is worth it. From that perspective, this restaurant is nothing short of brilliant.

The restaurant is divided in two. The lower floor being more formal and much aimed towards dining and the top floor having more of a bar/pub vibe. The atmosphere is great for both and the service is impeccable.

The food is varied in a few but well selected options that range from the classic Italian and French cuisine, to more risqué dishes from Morocco, Thailand or Vietnam. Serving sizes were perfect, the food nuanced and tasteful. Prices are what you expect, but not over the top. The wine list is also very good, particularly well priced.

I was expecting a typical restaurant of Borde Rio: expensive, barely decent food with a great atmosphere, what I found instead was a top 10 restaurant, arguably top 5. I'll come back... waiting with baited breath.

Zanzibar is one of those restaurants where you go rather for atmopshere than food - and the atmosphere is great. It is set at the very nice (and upmarket) Borde Rio gastronomical complex; they have an enchanting interior, with apparently authentic Middle Eastern lanterns and service is absolutely top-class.

That is not to say that the food is not good - it should (my opinion) just not be the main reason for coming to Zanzibar. For example, the humus I ordered was OK, but not very authentic and a bit cold (there is a small Syrian place on Loreto with Dardignac which does the 'real thing'). The rice I ordered with the Congoles chicken -which was nice enough- came straight out of the microwave (as it was slighly dry and the bowl itself was very hot). Let's say it is a case of good ideas but exection can be improved.

I would surely come back in company.
