Last May I spent three nights at the Andes Hostel. Me and my girlfriend chose a double-bed room with private bathroom. Along our stay I could notice that staying in a room like this is like staying in a good hotel as the cleaness and confort are similar. Despite our room was situated in the third floor in a non-elevator building and with a not so efficient shower at the bathroom, I guess everything was great. The breakfest is nice with tastefull breads, "dulce de leche", butter, juices and hot chocolate. The location is also great, with the subway station across the street and some charming restaurants nearby. The staff was always very friendly although in most of the times the large lobby was so loud and smoky.

The hostel is well located in Bellas Artes and you can walk to most of the tourist hotspots from it. The rooms and bathrooms are very clean.

However, we stayed here at the beginning of February, when it is still very hot in Santiago, there was no fan or aircon in the room. It is located next to a few restaurants and bars, and it is very noisy at night with the window open. Our double room, had just enough space for the bed and nothing else. There are no lockers in the room to put your valuables in. There is only one computer for this large hostel, which you have to pay for. This was the only hostel we stayed at in South America where we had to pay to use the internet and that did not have a laundry service.

A good, cheap Japanese restaurant next store is Kintaro - excellent sushi.

I stayed at the Andes Hostel for just one night during a layover from Mendoza, Argentina to Easter Island, Chile. The staff was very helpful in arranging my shuttle to the airport and even woke me when I overslept.
The room was clean, the bed was comfy, and the stylings were simple and pleasing. There was plenty of storage, though the room itself was quite small. The shared bathrooms were very clean and modern, though the water temperature was preset (at least in the one shower stall I used) and was a bit cold.
There is free wifi (or you can pay to use their computer,) a bar, television in the common area, phones, etc... All the necessities are available.
The best part was perhaps the location. It was 10 steps from the metro station which was very helpful. It was also close to shops, Plaza de Armas, cerros Santa Lucia and San Cristóbal and restaurants on Lastarria.
Cost was good, about $35 (probably can find cheaper housing, but due to location and cleanliness, this hostel was worth it.)

We are two 30-somethings that like to travel independently. This place was perfect for us as it was centrally located and right across from the Bellas Artes metro station. We liked that we could get a private room with bath attached for around $50. The staff was very friendly and a breakfast was included (simple warm ham/cheese sandwich, juice, coffee or tea and small slice cake). Our room was small, but tidy and there was alway hot water and decent pressure. There is also a kitchen that you can use. Overall, we thought this was a good value and would not hesitate to recommend it to the budget-conscious independent traveler.

We have stayed at the Andes a few times and keep coming back. What the rooms lack in flash they make up for in cleanliness. The staff are awesome people and the bathrooms are nice. Breakfast can get a bit boring (ham and cheese every day), but if you are looking for a safe bet for a relatively cheap place that is right off a metro line, this is your hostal. It also seems to be a great place to meet young travellers.
