We chose this hotel based on convenience and found it to be acceptable - not much more. It is situated in a pretty good location in Providencia but like other have said, the place is pretty dated. Our main complaint really had nothing to do with the hotel but more with the AC. If it was on, it beeped loudly every 10 minutes or so which made sleeping a bit annoying. The staff tried to figure it out but were unable to change it. Perhaps the best part of this property was the staff - very friendly and helpful.

It was a dreadful experience:

- 3 of 6 days the air conditioner did not work (in the middle of winter!!!)
- The tobacco stench was overwhelming (disgusting curtains)
- Filthy spots in the carpet (A LOT)
- A blanket left as a solution to the broke air conditioner was shelter-like
- The room had space barely to stand up
- The TV set (cable) looks awful
- The common areas of the hotel lacked heating (so you can freeze in there)
- The staff were more worried about not being nagged by the management, that about giving a good service.
- All the complaints were fixed the day after (if they fixed at all)

I stayed here just over a year ago and paid $70 USD per night for a single bed in peak season (December). Naively booking via telephone this time and not getting the total price was a mistake. As of July 2011, the online prices are listed only through Feb. 2011. Well, double rooms have increased from $85 USD in Feb. 2010 to $95 USD in Feb. 2011 to $120 USD in July 2011! The rooms are still the same with the beat-up old carpets and antique furniture. On top of that, we had a valid coupon (from a Copec map) for a 25% discount good at all Diego de Almagro Hoteles (of which Alcala del Rio is one). They first said that it was only valid in peak season (though the last peak season prices were much cheaper than the current off-season rates). After I pressed a little on this to try to understand the logic, I was told that they never honor this coupon (apparently, they only affiliate with Diego de Almagro Hoteles when it best suits them).

As far as location, it is centrally located and the (limited) parking is a plus. As others have said, the breakfast is decent - a typical "continental" breakfast in the U.S.

The best quality of this hotel is the location: it's easy to get anywhere, the subway is a block away and there are a lotta restaraunts in a walking distance. The bathroom was very small and the toilet kinda did not go easily off (waste of water). The staff was really nice mainly the front desk people who always helped us and gave us information in english, spanish and even portuguese. The breakfast was good, altough it was a bit cold because the heating at the common areas of the hotel didn't seem to be working. The only problem we had was the maid that insistently left only one set of towels and they wouldn't answer the fone at the front desk so we had to go all the way down a couple times just to ask for towels. Overall i recomend it for tourists that will spent just a little time at the hotel.

We stayed one night here before returning to the US. Rooms were small, a bit stuffy, with tired carpeting, but clean. Breakfast is OK.
Staff were nice----UNTIL one of our bags, left in their care for the day, mysteriously disappeared. Of course, it contained 2 laptops with years of academic work!! Beware the left luggage scenario at this hotel, since they evidently do not secure the area sufficiently, and staff is overworked/inexperienced and not aware of comings and goings. No explanation was given for lack of security, and we are still waiting for the hotel to replace the computers. Police response was very slow, and we don't think a security camera in the lobby is functioning--the manager on duty was suitably distressed but didn't seem to know how to deal with the situation. We regret not being more vigilant. There is a very nice bed and breakfast nearby that we stayed in for several days earlier in the trip, which we would recommend without hesitation (Villafranca).

The room I got for $120/night was tiny. Max of 3 feet of room between the bed and any other furniture piece or wall. Bathroom is even smaller. No room for toiletteries anywhere, so I had to put them on top of the toilett or on the desk in the room (not such a big problem - the size of the room made it very close to the bathroom!). Bed was OK, temp OK (remote-controlled AC that actually worked very well - only good thing I had).

By FAR the WORST thing was the service. Nobody with client contact had a clue about anything. I do speak fluent Spanish since I am a Spanish native and it was almost impossible to get anything right. The people in the front desk either don't know or don't care, and I don't know what is worst. It's supposed to be a 4 star hotel, but the service was worst than most road-side motels in the US. I do have to say that the maid I had on my floor was really nice and great.

The restaurant was OK for breakfast and lunch. However, for dinner it was very LIMITED in options. I stayed for 5 nights and run out of new things to taste after the 3rd day. The cuisine was OK, nothing major. I would compare it to a 2 fork restaurant.

OK for business, but I would definetly NOT recommend it to stay for tourists. There are better options. I stayed the week prior at a brother-hotel (same chain) close to the center of Santiago. Sooo much better. Lots of activity around the hotel, places to go walk, visit. Not as many restaurants around there, though. But the lively environment made it well worth staying at the hotel in the center, and it was cheaper than Alcal (again same chain of hotels).
