Owner description: The center of Chile's history, this presidential palace is a beautiful building that occupies an entire city block on downtown Santiago.

This is the central part of Santiago, with lots of stores, restaurants and cafes. The cafes are worth a visit, because the coffee of the restaurants is Chile is bad (too mild). Only in the cafes you will find good coffee.

La Moneda is a beautiful place, don't get me wrong, but at the same time there isn't much that makes it unique. The statues behind the palace give a short history of Chile's rulers, but that is about it.

We had a private tour, arranged by the judiciary of Chile. The Palace is open for visits/tours, but may often be closed, sometimes at short notice, because of security or other issues. The interior was substantially and successfully rebuilt or refurbished following its near destruction by Air Force, military and para-military units during the coup in September 1973. Good official tour guides (as we had) can bring out the richness of the history of the building and its contents. I would rate a visit a 'must do' if you can gain access.

Santiago is a very nice city for walking around, it is clean and I felt very safe here. Walking around this area are several pedestrian only streets filled with shops and hustle-bustle. There were pastry shops and out in the Santiago night enjoying medio-lunas (croissants) while walking around La Moneda it felt like I was in Europe. This is a fun and accesible place, if you're in Santiago I recommend checking it out.

I suppose if you're in Santiago, this is a necessary historical stop. But there's nothing to see here. The museum is pretty okay, but the plaza and the palace are... what you'd expect. No one is going to drool over the photos.
