This 20th. century building inspired by French architecture has a beautiful glass domed ceiling that lights up the interior and the works in it. It has a permanent exhibit of the best Chilean art and it usually has good temporary exhibitions of both Chilean and international artists. The Museum shop is a must and it has a nice coffee shop. The entire neighborhood houses Santiago's bohemian quarter with nice bookstores and little restaurants that you must seek out (in daylight).

Go on Sunday to get in free. Check out the homeless people who have used the entrance stairway as a home - there's ingenuity! Once inside, the interior of the building is almost as good as the exhibitions. An enormous open space atrium surrounded by a balcony above gives a wonderful atmosphere to the range of statues exhibited on the ground floor. The other individual exhibition rooms housed art that was a bit modern for our taste and somehow you got the feeling that they needed to fill the place with more choices - it all felt a bit empty and lacking atmosphere. You would think that there would be a connecting door to the adjoining museum - no you have to exit and walk round.

We enjoyed it here but more for adults as our kids were a bit young for this. They were interested and we stayed for about an hour Exhibits are great and plenty to see a good afternoon out. Staff here again spoke excellent English and you can take a tour or join an existing tour free of charge.

The outside of the building is dark and depressing looking but when you walk inside it takes your breath away. You walk into a huge open space with wonderful lighting and an assortment of sculptures all around you. This alone was worth checking this place out but you will be surprised at the wonderful collections also on display in the many galleries. This place is also free on Sunday if you are looking for a cheap place to take your date.
