This is the oldest church in Santiago. The interior is not especially ornate. If you have time it's worth a quick stop particularly if you enjoy colonial architecture.

What can I say? Really lovely old church on the Plaza de Armas - the one shown in the iconic views of Santiago juxtaposed with a modern glass tower with the Post Office on the other corner. The Spaniards knew how to build magnificent churches, and this one is no exception, although it is not as highly gilded as many.

A couple of unusual things were that a number of the side altars had relics in them, and one can descend the stairs below the nave into the crypt, which is really nothing but a typical mausoleum. Some of the carving was beyond belief - stone that looked so much like real fabric draped that I literally had to touch it to be sure it really was stone.

Guard your belongings closely, though, as in all areas of the Centro Historico. Pickpockets abound, and I doubt they take a holiday in churches, and certainly not out in the plaza itself and the side streets to access it.

Accidentally found this church since we went the wrong way out of subway looking for Cerro Santa Lucia! What a find! A beautifully preserved ornate church on the inside with many altar shrines. Very beautiful and moving. So glad we stumbled upon it!

This church & museum is a place to know part of the history of Santiago as the last "big" city of the Spanish colony.

I am always in awe at the beauty of the old cathedrals, and this one will not disappoint you. It is in much better condition than some I have seen. The craftsmanship is simply amazing!
