Owner description: This handicraft village is a great place to shop for traditional Chilean arts and crafts and one of the few places you might be able to bargain in Santiago.

The Marriott hotel concierge recommended Los Dominicos Market over the Central Market downtown. We had driven by the Central Market in downtown Santiago the day and had some concerns on safety. They explained that Central Market was more where locals shop for everyday household clothing and good and not the handiwork of local artists. We took the advice and rode the metro two stops to the end of the line. Bought two Chilean masks to add to our collection and works by a local artist. The area is next to a church and is shaded with many trees and a steam runs through the property with bridges you cross to visit the different stores. Not handicapped friendly in some areas. A couple of very good cafes. We spent about 4 hours one morning shopping and eating at this lovely Handicraft Village.

We travel to Valparaiso two to three times a year but on our return trip to the States we spend a few hours at this shopping village since our plane departs in the late evening. There are many shops with a variety of merchandise. The restaurant in the village is excellent especially the corn soup.

It is very close to the metro station, and it takes no longer than 1 hour to visit the fair, so I would recommend it. Although, my recommendation is that you visit there on a Saturday: there is a fruits and seafood fair between the station and the market which is really worth a visit.
In the market all houses are old, made of Adobe (a sun-dried, unburned brick of clay and straw), and this is what is most interesting about there. Another nice thing is the cats that live there, all sweet and friendly. Handicraft is more expensive than in other parts of the city. Entrance is free.

So far this is my favorite handicraft market on 4 continents. I have never been disapointed in anything that I got there and the small shop/workshop feel of the place is hard to beat. I have found good leather, wood carving, and glass items there and usually directly from the artisans themselves.

This is a lovely area to visit with genuine handicrafts - some made on the premises - and all good quality. Lots of small shops lining narrow alleyways, and even on a Monday many are open. In the central square there is a lovely place to eat - hot food, reasonable prices and good service - and tables outside. There was a man playing a harp nearby and this added ambiance to the occasion. If you have a 'free' day in Santiago this is a very good place to visit.
