Owner description: Tour the eclectic architecture of this home which served as the romantic hideaway for famed poet Pablo Neruda and his wife Matilde, as portrayed in the 1995 film "Il Postino."

Tour was led by a guide, available in English or Spanish, who was very knowledgeable and easy to understand. Visited all three Neruda houses and it was a highlight of the trip!

La Chascona was ransacked by the police force of the Pinochet Regime shortly after Neruda's death, as our tour guide hastened to point out, so many of the objects currently in the restored house were brought there by Matilde Urrutia, his third wife, from his other houses. The tour is weighed heavily by the darkness both of La Chascona being his place of death, and of the political history; nevertheless, Neruda's playfulness and brilliance shows through in the layout and beauty of the place, and it's well worth a chunk of your time.

This is a great place to see whether you like Neruda's poetry or not, but the tour was a little rushed. It does not take long to go through, but there are interesting things to see nearby like San Cristobal and a variety of good restaurants.

Difficult to find as it is hidden up a small side street. We had a great tour and the english speaking guide was very good and friendly. LOTS of stairs and small passageways. No explained this to us even though one of our party had an obvious walking stick and had problems with the stairs. It was a treat to see his Nobel Prize medal. Interesting history of Neruda.

I didn't really know much about Neruda, but my son loves his poetry so we decided to go on a tour. We had just done the Free Walking Tour of Santiago and it finished outside La Chascona. We went in and were able to join the next tour.
Neruda's life story is fascinating and our guide did a good job of telling us about in English. The unusual design of the house is based on boats and is very interesting. Seeing the huge shoes and hearing the story about them...Well it's really worth a visit.
