“nice, clean, expensive”
Reviewed August 22, 2012

It is very clean, but food prices are more expensive than in fancy restaurants. But it is worth going to.

“awnful!!!”
Reviewed August 13, 2012

The place is dirty, smells really bad, and the worst part of it, waiters keep bugging you to have a meals on their places. As it can be classified as a "tourist hot spot" everything is overpriced. I spent 15 minutes inside, not worth at all.

“ultra-fresh seafood, well done”
Reviewed August 12, 2012

It's a gritty environment but most of the restaurants are clean, service was great where I ate and the food -- ceviche, fried fish and french fries -- was outstanding: fresh, flavorful, simple presentation. Recommended unless the overwhelming smell of fish out in the open in adjacent market stands turns you off. Stay in the main concourse, not the alleyways, to avoid fish flung into buckets, disgusting floors and behind-stand activity that may deprive you of appetite. But if you have a strong stomach, brave it all, dine heartily and check out the locals, especially on a Sunday mid-afternoon. A blast!

“visit and enjoy”
Reviewed August 12, 2012

on a Sunday, mid-afternoon, recently I visited ... walked around inside the place several times ... hordes of people dining, not much to buy except every local variety of seafood in the raw ... did find some nice lapis lazuli / silver earrings as gifts for a great price, vendor very kind and helpful, enjoyed haggling ... great place for people watching, the real Santiago, I suspect, as museums in the city were kind of a let-down. recommended.

“A place of such variety”
Reviewed August 3, 2012

Do not be put off by the many people trying to drag you into their restaurant or shop or stall, this centrally located market is full of surprises including (we were told) a design copied from Smithfield meat market in London. Anything from eating delicious fresh seafood, (including the enormous snow crab,) to purchasing great tourist nicknacks, to buying fresh fruit & vegetables to cruising the outside fish market. Admittedly the main sprawling restaurant of D'onde Augusto in the centre is a bit commercialized and a bit over priced. That said, the quality and quantity were great and the people watching at a Sunday lunch service was worth those extra pesos. If you want a cheaper version eat at one of the restaurants along the outside of the market - we got a snow crab meal there for half the price.
