Owner description: This 860 meter hill in the center of Santiago features a zoo and wine museum at the midway point and a gondola ride to the top, where a virgin mary statue overlooks the city.

We arrived in Santiago on the day the funicular to the top of this very steep hill re-opened after several months of refurbishment. It was also a holiday weekend and the place was awash with tourists and locals. Just as well that it was open as it would have been a long, tough climb on a warm day though the views at the top are fabulous. The area around the base of the hill is worth a look, full of quirky houses and small restaurants.

There are amazing views of the city from this hill. A huge statue of the Virgin Mary has been at the very top for more than a century. We were driven to the top by our guide so we did not use the funicular.

It is worth waiting to go up the hill after it rained so that there isn't a blanket of smog covering the city. The fenucular ride up is worth it if you get into the last carriage, you get a fabulous view of the city. I would definitely recommend walking back down, the scenery is spectacular and there are tons of beautiful parks along the way where you can rest a bit.

I was excited to get on the funicular. After watching the video before we entered the elevator, I was concerned. But the few was worth it even with the thick smog we could see for miles.

There is a funicular you can pay that takes you to the top, but the hike is well worth it for the views and a little exercise. The hike is a little strenuous, but there are many benches along the way to take breaks. Fantastic views of the city on a clear day. My Top 5 things to do in Santiago.
