It is worth waiting to go up the hill after it rained so that there isn't a blanket of smog covering the city. The fenucular ride up is worth it if you get into the last carriage, you get a fabulous view of the city. I would definitely recommend walking back down, the scenery is spectacular and there are tons of beautiful parks along the way where you can rest a bit.

I was excited to get on the funicular. After watching the video before we entered the elevator, I was concerned. But the few was worth it even with the thick smog we could see for miles.

There is a funicular you can pay that takes you to the top, but the hike is well worth it for the views and a little exercise. The hike is a little strenuous, but there are many benches along the way to take breaks. Fantastic views of the city on a clear day. My Top 5 things to do in Santiago.

If one is visiting Santiago, Chile this is a must see place. The reason is that it is a hilly area that gives great views of Santiago in all directions. When I first visited Santiago in 2005 I was able to ride the funicular up the hill. This time in January 2013 the funicular was not operating at the time but that was okay because free bus service was provided to take us to the top. The views from the top over the city are quite impressive. The only drawback is sometimes the haze prevents having a good view of the Andes mountains. Also down the hill you can visit the Santiago Zoo. San Cristobal Hill is a great place to spend some time while in Santiago, Chile.

Four of us walked to San Cristobal Hill and took the funicular up to the top of the ride. Off and walked up many steps to the statue of Mary. We had hoped that we would get a good view of the city and the Andes. Not to be - at this time of year there is a fog/mist that sits in the valley obscuring parts of the city and only leaving an outline of the Andes. Would be superb on a clear day.
