This modern, soaring, center-atrium hotel is a good choice, on the upper (but not luxury) end of hotels. It is in the booming (much construction) northern side of the city. It is necessary to take a taxi to other locations in the city, but they were always available, and were reasonable. (The hotel doorman asked when we returned twice what we paid, and said it was OK - apparently, there are some problems with overcharging tourists. It might be good to ask hotel staff at the entrance approximately what the fare should be to your destination, to make sure you aren't gouged. It should be fairly easy to make sure too by seeing the meter as you get in. Don't expect taxi drivers to speak English.)
Our plane was very late (and we had a horrible long time in line at the airport, paying the $131 p.p. reciprocity/entry fee). So when we arrived at midnight, we were already assigned a room. I'm sure upper floors must have a grander view (if the clouds or smog are not too bad), but ours on a low floor was pleasant enough - looking out onto the lovely gardens around the pool. The room (probably standard) was roomy, clean, and furnished modern. Food prices in the hotel were high (for the city), but a restaurant meal was pleasant. Room service (breakfast) was prompt and accommodating (when the order didn't arrive exactly as ordered, it was quickly corrected). Note - there is an ATM just off the lobby - a safe, handy place to get Chilean pesos.
