“Great place to stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 16, 2014

This is a very nice hotel, the staff are fantastic..... the hotel is just next to a very big shopping mall that has all you need to drink coffee or eat .... the hotel is in the right part of town.... close to everything. The hotel could do with a lick of paint, change the carpets and most of all change the air conds so they make less noise... apart from that... this is the place to stay in Santiago !

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor, quiet side

We stayed here for three nights. The room was a decent size with pretty views of the city and Andes beyond. The bathroom was big as well, the only negative was that the toilet required several flushes! The brunch is a little pricey ($14 per person), but the selection and quality were excellent. The hotel is a distance from the sights we wanted to see (Bellavista, Plaza de Armas, Santa Lucia, Cerro San Cristobal). However, the hop-on/hop off city tour bus stops at all those places, and we caught the bus just two short blocks from the Radisson. The very best thing about this hotel is the staff! Everyone was friendly and helpful. The most friendly and helpful to us were Gabriel at the front desk, and two concierges named Rodolpho and Ivo. And they speak English, which made things easier (they even indulged our Spanglish). Overall, we had a very enjoyable stay!

In selecting a hotel in any city, different people have different needs and priorities. But I think we can all agree that customer service is very important. That is where the Radisson Plaza Santiago excels. There might be a tendency to view a large international chain hotel as a cookie cutter copy of all the others. That is certainly not true of this particular property. At every level of hotel staff, from General Manager, Camilo Navas, to Juan in The Brick restaurant and Jose in the front lobby, they all seem to be genuinely interested in your welfare and are dedicated to making sure your stay is as enjoyable as possible. Although they are in the hospitality business, there is nothing insincere about their willingness to help you in any way possible. It’s not painted on – it’s genuine. I have never been compelled to write similar sentiments about any other hotel before, but the Radisson Plaza Santiago is such a refreshing standout. If five-star customer service without a five-star price tag is important to you, this may be the place for you.

Room Tip: Try to get a room facing the Andes.

The title of this review is not a criticism; predictability, when one is staying in a variety of hotels of differing standards over the course of a holiday, can be a virtue. We were in and out of Santiago four times in the course of our trip, and having found the Radisson good the first time, knew that we wouldn't have to worry about the quality of the accommodation on the next three. It is a large, ever so slightly bland international hotel. The rooms are a decent size; the staff are polite and helpful; we got a free pisco sour each time we checked in. The breakfast buffet was reliable and sprang no surprises, although one day someone may be able to explain to me why breakfast coffee in hotels in the Americas is always so lousy. The coffee from a modest coffee shop in Santiago Airport was ten times better. Of the two bars in the foyer, one was usually nearly empty.

The Radisson is not centrally placed in Santiago; it's in a commercial district, opposite the self-proclaimed "largest shopping mall in South America". This is handy if you want to buy a book or some tonic water, but we didn't come to Santiago to replicate the kind of shopping experience we can get at home. The city centre is a couple of miles away, easily reached by Metro. If you have any sense you will go there, for there's nothing to do around the hotel. Walk the few hundred yards to the street called Isidora Goyenechea to eat; it's full of restaurants.

Room Tip: The higher the better.

Great hotel: fantastic location; clean, large rooms. Free wi-fi, which I really appreciated!

Criticism: in the room they provide tea & coffee facilities. However they fail to provide milk. Yeah, some people take their tea/coffee black - but some (or most) take milk. So why would they neglect to include milk in the facilities?

I called housekeeping, who offered me that awful milk powder stuff. I explained that my wife and I required real liquid milk. Dry milk powder (or "creamer") is what you might expect in a cheap waiting room. But in a 4-star hotel in a capital city, catering to international guests, it will not do at all. Housekeeping told me to call room service, who said they could provide real milk but wanted to charge me extra for it. I said I did not need a whole bottle or carton: just a teeny, tiny little splash to put in my tea. They refused, so I asked for the manager.

The manager initially tried to fob me off by saying that the hotel would not provide milk - and that no Radisson hotel provided it. I replied that this was simply not true: I have stayed in many hotels in many countries round the world, and have had no trouble obtaining milk before. Eventually he relented, and agreed to send up with a small amount of milk. I eventually got my tea. But it should not have taken a complaint to the manager to obtain something so basic. Radisson Santiago, if you're reading - please understand that international guests in a 4* hotel expect such basic things as standard. If you're going to provide tea & coffee in the room then you need to provide milk: just like you provide sugar. You don't need to provide a large amount: those tiny little plastic cartons are fine.

Anyway - despite this hiccup, I would return here if I ever visit Santiago again.

As usual one cannot ask anything better than the hospitality of raddison throughout the globe. Once again it amazes us at our first visit to santiago. Right from location, the ambience, the staff courtesy and service all up to mark. Would like to mention about the hostess at buffet breakfast desk, she was sweet and graceful as she greeted us 'namaste' every morning . Special mention for David at the concierge who is out there to help you every time you look out for someone. Great memories with raddison..
