“Spoilt our Stay in Santiago”
Reviewed March 23, 2014

First impression was the reception where there was very little space and lack of comfortable seating. The room only had air conditioning in the main part where there was a kitchen area which did not have any untensils or china which did not bother us. There was no air conditioning in the bedroom area and the traffic noise was horrendous. The hotel was a fair distance away from any shops or bars and if you walked the other way you just came to an area which was full of shops selling motor equipment or ironmonger type shops. We came across beggars laying on a mattress on the main road and the whole area was not very nice at all especially for two women on their own. There was a lack of information in the hotel and the staff spoke very little english. All in all not an enjoyable stay at all

We stayed in December and unfortunately it was still too early to use the outdoor swimming pool and the jacuzzi, which are not heated and were freezing! You do get an amazing view from the rooftop though. The room was more like a mini apartment, which was a nice surprise, with a kitchen and living room area, and a balcony accessible both from the living room and the bedroom. Again, the views were amazing. We were on the 11th floor (the hotel has 25 floors), and it was just stunning. One thing they could improve is the complete lack of cutlery and crockery in the kitchen - it defies having it in the first place!! The hotel was incredibly busy, especially at breakfast time, you could struggle to get a seat, but the breakfast was lovely, if a little noisy from being so busy. Having said that, night times were very quiet and pleasant, you would not have know you were in such a busy hotel. Staff were very helpful and efficient. There are metro connections nearby or you could walk a bit more and be at the city centre, we found we quite liked to walk and take in the city around us. It is not bang in the middle of town, but I have not seen people sleeping rough and I would not say the area is run down.

Room Tip: Try to get a North- or East-facing room, amazing views.

Hotel Gen Santiago Chile
My friend and I stayed at the Hotel Gen Santiago Chile for two nights prior to our return to UK after a cruise around South America.
The hotel is situated in a rundown area of Santiago where we encountered people sleeping rough on mattresses on the pavement. There were no restaurants within walking distance of the hotel and being two females we were a little apprehensive of using taxis at night. We ate in the hotel both evenings where the food was adequate.
The room had a mini kitchen but no utensils or crockery.
There were no plugs for any sink or the bath which of course rendered it useless. When we queried this we were told in halting English that it was for the environment.
There was no shower gel or other bathroom amenities which one expects in a 4* hotel
There was no air conditioning in the bedroom and what there was in the living area did not reach into the bedroom.
The traffic noise was horrendous even though we were on the 18th floor
Most of the staff did not speak any English and the couple who did only had a little command of the English language. The young lady who served in the coffee shop was very friendly and tried her best to help.

We were part of a large group staying in this hotel after a cruise.
There are no 110 Volt outlets in the rooms.
On checking into our room, it was hot, and we could not get the air conditioner to work. The hotel has a complex electronic key system. When I went down to the front desk to ask for help, and returned to the room, when I unlocked the door the second time, the air condtioner turned itself on. I do not understand, but apparently there is some tie between the door lock system, and the air conditioner. We checked in at about 4 PM. It was about midnight before the air conditioner was able to cool the room down enough to be comfortable.
There was no plug for the bath tub.
The hotel is located in a busy commercial area, with lots of traffic. Buses, trucks, cars, motorcycles, etc. The traffic lasted until very late at night. The hotel is not sound proofed. The rooms have large plate glass sliding doors, which are single paned.
The stores in the neighborhood are not upscale. Nearly every store had iron fence around it, and several had concertina wire on top of the fences. There were two funeral parlors in the block.
The bathroom sink is one of the new "modern" designs in which the sink is set on top of the counter. Very dramatic. The sink left a very narrow counter space on either side. So narros that I could not open my dop kit to shave the morning.
The bathroom is poorly lighted. There are two small bulbs in the ceiling above the sink, behind where one stands. The result is that one's neck and chin are in the shadow while shaving.
Breakfast the next morning was interesting. There was a herbal life youth conference staying in the hotel at the same time. The breakfast room was too crowded. It was impossible to slide between tables to sit on the back bench without moving adjacent tables. It took a very long time for them to brew more coffee when they ran out in mid session. It was quite strong coffee. Most diluted it with hot water. There was a nice selection of food, including scambled eggs, rice, hot dogs, pastries, fresh fruit, chees, etc. Really a nice selection. Unfortunately the scrambled eggs and rice were both burned. Tables were brushed off (not wiped clean) after each use.
Each bath room has an individual hot water heater in it. Not an instant heater, just a small conventional tank heater. Small. My wife and I use exclusively rain water at home, so we are are careful to conserve water. My wife showered first. Half way through my shower the hot water turned cool.
As mentioned above we were part of a large group off a cruise ship. Our bags wee delivered to the hotel that morning. We checked in in the mid afternoon. One party had missing bags. They had been placed in the wrong room. The bags were not located until midnight.
Judge for yourselves

Stayed at this Hotel as it was where our Intrepid tour commenced.
You can view the main facilities from the Hotel website. The room was very spacious and comfortable compared to where we stayed in the city centre before getting here.
There were a number of places where you could buy your supplies.
Only setback (if you can call it that), is that it is a bit out of the main city centre and about 1/2 hour walk to town.

Hotel Gen is very well located, close to a Subway Station (Santa Isabel) and some grocery stores where you can buy your water bottles to hidrate you during your tours (Santiago has a very dry air).
The hotel has a swimming pool on its top, wich is very nice and has also a gorgeus overview from the city.
The staff is good. I needed to change rooms because my shower wasn't getting hot and they were helpful with that.
The breakfast wasn't exactly what I like the most for breakfast, but it was ok.
The cost-benefit was good. I recomend them.

A nice hotel in not a very good location.
Great view and pool upstairs, gym is fairly average.
The staff were helpful and their taxi service was convenient but expensive.
Wifi in the lobby was good but didnt get any in our room.
But our room was very comfotable with a small kitchen sitting area/desk and a clean ensuite.
The bed was small and the cards to get into our room were often not working which was very frustrating.
Good breakfast but not great.
Also very slow lifts.
Still an adequate hotel considering it was under $100US per night for 2 people.
