Owner description: The Museum of Memory and Human Rights seeks to draw attention to human rights violations committed by the Chilean state between 1973 and 1990. Its mission is to allow dignity for victims and their families, stimulate reflection and debate and to promote respect and tolerance in order that these events never happen again. It is a Bicentennial project, inaugurated on January 2010, by then President Bachelet. Its purpose is to promote educational initiatives that enhance knowledge and consideration. Its location, on Matucana Street, is also part of an ongoing effort to promote the cultural circuit of Santiago's West Side. Through objects, documents and archives presented in different settings and formats, as well as a innovative sight and sound presentation, it is possible to learn part of this history: the military coup, the repression that took place in the following years, the resistance movement, exile, international solidarity, reparation policies.

“Fascinating and informative”
Reviewed March 18, 2013

When we visited the Museum we did not expect we would spend such a long time there but as it was such an interesting and well presented insight into this period of Chile's history we got totally immersed in it! Would thoroughly recommend a visit to any visitor to Santiago.

“Things you didn't know”
Reviewed March 15, 2013

This is a must if you want to understand more about Chileans. Thought it would be the usual museum fare, tick it off the list and out in 2 hours. Oh no. You could easily spend the whole day here, watching films, listening to personal experiences of the time, reading papers etc. A very sobering experience and well worth the trip.

“A Worthwhile Visit”

Let's you see and experience a brutal time in the history of this country. Very well designed building and exhibits. Should be on the top of your list of things to see in Santiago.

“Extremely moving”
Reviewed March 14, 2013

This is an excellent way to spend several hours, providing an in-depth history of the fall of the Allende government. Though in Spanish (primarily), English-speaking visitors will find the information accessible and of interest.
