“Excellent Service on Very Short Notice”
Reviewed July 31, 2012

I was arranging a Santiago apartment rental through Hector while I was on Easter Island. Hector kept in close contact despite email challenges i was having on the Island. By the time i arrived in Santiago airport i still had not committed to an apartment so i called Hector. He immediately arranged a 2 night apartment stay in Providencia and we were able to check in within 60 minutes of arriving by taxi. Very efficient and professional service. That same evening he arranged another apartment for the remaining 5 nights of our stay. I would highly recommend Hector based on the great service he provided us on such short. Thanks Hector!!

“Full service tour!”
Reviewed July 10, 2012

We booked two days of touring with HecTour Service and an airport pick up and drop off. All the services were first rate and professional. Our first tour was in Santiago. Hopping into the very clean minivan, we explained we wanted to get to know the layout and the history of the city, as well as the surrounding neighborhoods. We got exactly what we hoped for - as well as being taken to a great spot in the Mercado Central for lunch. The second tour was to Valaparaiso and Vina del Mar. As others have noted, this is where having a very local guide is essential, and Hector grew up in Valaparaiso. We stopped for wine tasting along the way and then had a wonderful tour of the two cities along the coast. HecTour Services really made our experience in Santiago a total pleasure. Also, consider renting one of Hector's apartments. We stayed in the 2 bedroom in Providencia and it was very nice and comfortable - in a great neighborhood.

“Wonderful Tour of Valparaiso, Vina del Mar & Casablanca Valley”
Reviewed June 13, 2012

I wanted to tour Valparaiso and Vina del Mar, with a stop on the way at a local winery so I contacted Hector and he planned the whole day. We had a great tour! We first stopped at the Emiliana Winery. We enjoyed the wine tasting but the tour of the winery was not what I was expecting because only the vineyards are at this location.....the production is done somewhere else. Then we were off to Vina del Mar & Valparaiso. Hector knew both of these cities very well and proved to be a great guide. One of my former students is studying in Valparaiso, and Hector was very accomodating in picking her up and including her in the afternoon portion of our tour. Overall, I have nothing but very positive comments about our experiences with Hector.

“Experiencing Valparaiso through a local expert”
Reviewed April 21, 2012

We wanted to do a tour of Valparaiso and Viña del Mar and and decided on Hector after reading tripadvisor reviews about his services. Hector picked us up in a van (clean and comfortable) from the hotel on the morning of our tour. Throughout the drive Hector provided a running commentary of the surrounds and answered questions we had about Chile and its culture and people. We worked out he was in fact born in Valparaiso so he was just the right person to take us around his hometown.

Our first stop was to the Emiliana organic vineyard in the Casablanca valley. We were surprised that we had to pay for the wine tasting but did so. Even then it took a while before we were attended to. None of us were particularly impressed by any of the wines unfortunately and on reflection should have missed this visit to give us more time at our intended destination. He had worked out during our drive that we were interested in local cuisine and he organised for us to have some homemade empanadas in Casablanca. He had discovered Rosa and her homemade empanadas on an earlier trip when he was asking some local residents where he could find some good empanadas and was directed to her home. We stopped Rosa’s home where she lived with her 3 children. Rosa invited us in and served us two kinds of empanadas she has just cooked. They were so delicious. As we spoke a little Spanish we managed to get her story how she started making and selling empanadas when she needed extra money to provide medical treatment for her youngest daughter soon after she was born. We were lucky to also meet that daughter (who had the biggest smile) and her eldest son.

We got to Viña del Mar shortly after that close to lunchtime passing the Curacavi valley and costal range. Before that, Hector stopped us at a lookout that provided a view of both Valparaiso to our left and Viña del Mar to our right. Our visit to Viña del Mar was brief as we were more interested to see the historic parts of Valparaiso. We did manage to stop at the flower clock, the Museo Fonck (which has one of the only Moais outside of Easter Island) and a lapis lazuli shop Faba. We also stopped for lunch at Fellini’s an Italian restaurant recommended by Hector, which we enjoyed.

The best part of our tour was Valparaiso. Our first stop was the corner of Pasaje Santa Lucia and Subida Ferrari in Bellavista where we saw some stunning murals all around the walls. After that we drove around a little, parked the van near the main square to another spot where we caught the oldest cable car up to Cerro Concepcion. We then made our way down by foot meandering down the streets passing many beautiful murals and buildings with colourful walls of corrugated zinc. Hector told us about the history of the city and the walls and how it has now the old quarters have developed into an artist colony. At one time, he stopped and introduced to a passer-by, an elderly but fit looking friendly gentleman whom we were told was an 80 year local well-known and respected in the community there.

We passed by many lovely cafes, bars and shops around as well as small boutique hotels. Although some of these were pretty new establishments in new or newly refurbished buildings, they were sympathetic to the style of the existing architecture. We took our time to explore the streets and stopped at some cafes (where we tried the traditional mote con huesillo made with dried peaches and barley) and visited some galleries. One gallery that I loved was Tienda Hain run by Solange Diaz Morales and her husband. I bought two of her hand painted ceramic plates with her designs of the indigenous Selk’nam tribe. During our walk, we stopped by on top of a flight of steps and knocked on a door where a lady offered her homemade alfajores for sale. Needless to say we tried some of those too. It was good but still can’t beat the Cachafaz ones we found in Buenos Aires.

It was dark by the time we got back to the hotel in Santiago and we were tired but happy. We enjoyed our time with Hector, loved the individual touches and experiences that peppered our tour with him. Would certainly recommend his services.

One suggestion would be to remember to bring some water for yourself on the trip.

“Great tour of Santiago”
Reviewed April 1, 2012 via mobile

Hector was not our guide, but made all the arrangements for airport transfers and lined up our time with Juan. Arrangements were EXACTLY as described. Our city tour with Juan was interesting and fun. Juan was knowledgeable and entertaining. His tour was filled with personal anecdotes that made our experience more interesting and memorable. Our trip to Casablanca Valley was fine, but the tours/tastings were a bit of a rip off. We ended up being charged for our guides' tastings in addition to our own. It didn't seem appropriate to charge us for our driver's tasting when he didn't taste, nor to pay for the winery guide's wine.... I'd definitely think twice about the winery tours, but it was fun to view the country-side on the way.
