Whatever you do, don't stay in room #3. It's right outside the check in desk and front door. Since hostel is near a lot of cool bars, you can imagine the noise late at night and early in the morning. Also, the security seemed very minimal. The gate and the front door weren't locked when we came in at night, and it seemed like anyone could easily come through our window. We asked to switch rooms the second night, and it worked out much, much better upstairs.

The location is really nice. I loved all the bars, restaurants, and general atmosphere of the Bella Vista neighborhood. You are also within walking distance of a lot of tourist spots. Cab ride from the airport, however, is very pricy. Oh, and on that note, I arranged for two airport pickups through Hostel del Barrio and no one showed up for either one. We got a cab just fine luckily.

The great location, free breakfast, and friendly staff are what makes this a good, four-star hostel.

Excellent location in a "must see" neighborhood, near to everithing you want, clean, staff very friendly and willing service. I recommend the rooms that not facing the street, because on weekends there may be some noise (not much anyway). The only complaint was a mix up with our reservation, which forced us to stay in a room with shared bathroom despite having booked a room with private bathroom!!. Otherwise, just excellent. Thanks Gonzalo, Nohra and other members of staff!

Room Tip: 2nd floor not facing the street rooms are quieter and have better WIFI reception

We had 2 nights at the hostal in Aug. We booked a double room with private bathroom. When we arrived the previous occupants had taken the room key with them so there was no way the lock the room door! While the staff were waiting for the locksmith to arrive, they offered us a double room with a shared bathroom but we thought both the room and bathroom looked dodgy and unorthodox. We decided to store our bags and wait for the lock to be fixed. It was fixed about 8 hours later at around 10pm! Breakfast was very nice. The hostal is in a good location in Bellavista close to alot of restaurants, bars and museums. Overall a good stay but perhaps not the best value for money.

Myself and my partner spent 3 nights at Hostal del Barrio in March 2012 and were very impressed.

We paid 20,000 Chilean Pesos a night for a double room, with a shared bathroom, including a hot shower, and breakfast.

Our room was spacious and clean, as was the shared bathroom. The communal areas, such as the area out the front of the hostel was a lovely area to chill out, speak to other travellers or Christian (the owner), and use the free wi-fi, which usually had a very strong signal.

The breakfast was brilliant, very filling, better than many of the South American hostels we have stayed in.

The location of the hostel is ideal - close to the bars and restaurants, not a very long walk to the centre of Santiago and the nearby San Christobal hill is worth a look.

Christian, the owner, was incredibly helpful and friendly. Definitely a hostel worth staying in.

The only slight quibble would be that sometimes the toilet paper had run out in the bathrooms, but nothing that couldn't be sorted quickly.

The germans know their game. This was the third german-run GH we visited while in Southern America and weren't disappointed. The guy who runs the place is a great character and very helpful.

Our room was on the 2nd floor, it was bright with three windows and quite pretty. The outdoor seating area is also very nice indeed and so are the common areas inside the hostel.

This place is one of the best hostels I have visited. Only problem is that it can be rather noisy since the common areas are directly next to the rooms and there was no enforced quiet time.

The hostel is located on a quiet street in Barrio Bellavista. It is within easy walking distance to the stations of three different metro lines. There are two main streets with many restaurants and bars within just few minutes’ walk as well. Funicular to the San Christobal hill is three blocks walk. Plaza de Armas, Museum of Fine Arts and other touristy attractions are also within easy walking distance. The neighborhood felt safe to walk through at any time during day and night.
I stayed in this hostel total of three times in three different rooms, all private rooms with private bathrooms. The rooms had variety of number and sizes of beds. The hostel can easily accommodate almost any size and shape of visitor groups. The entire premises were very clean and cleaned regularly. Rooms were simple, certainly no luxury, but neat and provided everything you needed. The linen was good and clean. Towels were provided as well. There was no problem with noise, heat or security.
Wi-Fi was included in rate and was strong throughout the building. Breakfast was very good and certainly well above average of the typical “hostel breakfasts”. The building is safe. During my stay there was 6.7 magnitude earthquake for one minute, without any damage to the building. The hostel provides great atmosphere.
The staff was extremely hospitable and informative. Especially Christian goes over and beyond to help.
I cannot say anything bad about this hostel. It provides great value for your money. This hostel ranks in the top five hostels I’ve stayed-in during my travels throughout Latin America. It comes highly recommended.

Either you like Santiago or not, Hostal del Barrio is definately the place to stay if you're backpacking. By mentioning backpacking, I don't mean it's not one of those places where you have to stay awake until wee hours, because some party group is keeping you awake. Altough the neighbourhood is by far the liveliest with tons of bars and restaurants, occupied by local uni students.

Lovely and personal, but clean and affordable place run by always so efficient Germans. That's probably the reason why del Barrio has one of the best breakfasts I've ever had in budget guesthouse. Not just that marmelade /w toast.

The personel is one of the greatest ever. Our experience below draws the picture for you.

One of the nights in Del Barrio we chatted with fellow travellers and got a tip about a rural homestay in Chepu, Southern Chile. Unfortunately we didn't write the places name down and as usual, didn't had contact info for the earlier visitors either. We had no chance than contact the Hostel and without hesitating, they contacted the guys we chatted before. Obviously hostel had their contact info in their records. Manager emailed us again, gave us the info and we were able to spent a great time in Chepu. That's that something I call good customer relations!

The guy though has a weird habit to add the word "bugger" into every English sentence he says. Don't mind, he's still a great guy! ;-)
