“It's a place to stay.”
Reviewed January 1, 2014

It's relatively cheap and close to Bellas Artes metro station. You have to make your own bed, and tear it down in the morning, but as far as hostels go it gets the job done. I guess it almost ensures that you have a clean bed. The bathrooms were decent as well.

It is certainly a place to stay.
At hostal de la barra you can find hostel kind of bed where you share the room and you make your own bed, among with very well equiped and fancy apartments up to 4 people and also private suites for 2. There a place for everyone at every price.

Thank you very much fro writing us

Good:
- Comfortable beds and warm blankets
- Three computers to use with pretty fast internet (the wifi was good too)
- Great location really close to a metro station

Bad
- Staff is cold and unfriendly (except for one of the cleaning ladies who was lovely!)
- You have to PAY to store your bags after you have stayed there, which is ridiculous for a hostel.. especially one that already charges more than it's really worth
- Breakfast was minimal.. slightly better than just bread and jam, but no where near as good as some of the other hostels.
- It is supposed to be smoke free but the staff were smoking in the common area down stairs
- We had to wait a really long time outside at night to be let in after ringing the bell a number of times.

Hi Christie,

we are very sorry about the guy smoking. We checked it and you were true so we just took action about it a couple of minutes ago. The staff member was a holiday replacement and unfortunatly wasnt at the height of our standards.

Main part of our staff took their vacations so we are sad replacement didnt work. But staff is BACK!!!

Every issue you named can be true when a staff desobey a main instruction and legal policy as not smoking is. Sorry for your experience but we encourage you to give us a second chance.

Have a good trip.

I didn't know it upon checking in, but apparently Hostel de la Barra has the same power as the Republic of Chile and the international financial system to set the exchange rate between US Dollars and Chilean Pesos. Yes, really. After being told that my dorm would cost $18 by the emotionless girl working at the reception desk, I proceeded to suggest I should pay about $8,500 Pesos given that, at the time, the current exchange rate between US Dollars and Chilean Pesos was approximately 1:473, a rate honored by other, honest accommodations in Chile. But, no, the stoic girl told me the accommodation would be $9,000 Pesos because, get this, the "hostel's exchange rate" is 1:500. I would add that she also refused to charge my credit card in US dollars -- only in Chilean Pesos -- indicating that indeed the hostel does enjoy setting its own rent-seeking exchange rate. Ok!? Well, rather than argue over a $1 and some change, I paid, but I did not appreciate exchange rate manipulation being used by this hostel to pocket some unearned change out of a guest's pocket. (Further, I would add that $18 -- well, $19 at the 'hostel's exchange rate' -- is the 'discount' rate at the moment and that dorms are normally priced at $25! An absolutely insane price, compared to other nicer accommodation in Bellavista, for this low-service hostel. Read on.)

This is a bare-bones hostel. 'Common space' consists of two picnic tables (yes, the hard wooden ones you would find in a city park) and some soft chairs down in the dingy basement kitchen. The minimal breakfast is served at one of the picnic tables.

Dorm rooms -- with eight beds -- have comfortable enough beds, but lots of street noise. Also, my dorm absolutely stunk. Why? Read on.

The men's bathroom was one of the most disgusting I encountered in a trip across South America -- the mold is so horrific above one of the showers that it leaves a disgusting stench throughout the second floor of the hostel, and, in particular, the dorm room where I stayed directly across from said bathroom. Also, the shower's water pressure was weak and hot water inconsistent.

Perhaps the only reason I didn't rate this hostel one star -- given the horrid sin of dishonesty with the exchange rate -- is that it is in a decent location by two metro stops and a decent-sized supermarket.

We are really sorry for your comment as uninformed and ask to Trip to delete it, since it we are accused of dishonest when in fact there is a complete lack of understanding on your part.

First we are accused of not wanting to charge your card in dollars. Well, this is not possible because the card system in Chile does not allow it, neither in this nor in any other hotel or business.

Second, we are accused of using a different change tipod and you wanted to use. Well, firstly clarify that if you pay in cash dollars is, according to the Chilean tax law, tax-free. If you pay in Chilean pesos, either cash or card, you SHOULD pay taxes to the state of Chile. Understand why there is a difference when paying in dollars or Chilean pesos? But freedom is taken freely desonestos he treat us and we do not accept.

Finally, make it clear that in Chile the tipod and change is not fixed centrally, is set by the market and each of the transactions made between priivados is the exchange rate that the parties to define. Again, you are very misinformed.

The rates in pesos and dollars are peerfectamente published and in view of everyone in the hostel reception. You could pay $ 18 in American bills and did not therefore conform to the peso rate published.

Everything else you said, so different from the comments of most of the passengers that leave us congratulations nuestrras quality facilities, we'll take it as a personal opinion from anger by the exchange rate.

Have a good day.

Well, It was my first visit to Santiago and I was so lucky because I stayed in Hostal de la Barra. It was really cool, because its location, you can walk to get Bellavista where you can have the best party ever in this city, you can go to main square, art museum and forestal park, plus it's only half block to the metro station. They know the best tips to visit everything that it is worthy in Santiago and they tell you how to visit viña del mar, valparaiso and take the wine tour. The service and treat are good, the environment is cool and the girl available in the reception is a very nice person. I'd like to return with my friends... I enjoyed Santiago very much !!!
