Down to the basics: you can choose between noisy because of street fuss outside your single pane window or noisy because of the soaring sound of approx 200 fans of the opposite building on the other side.
Rooms small and outworn, corridors smell of old carpet and cigarette smoke.
Staff is ok and helpful. Beds are quite good.
After all for what you get the price is a joke, which applies as well for the restaurant.

I spent 3 nights with my partner in Gran Palace in Santiago in Jan. 2011.
+ (I like) : Location in pedestrian zone, 3 blocks from plaza Armas and near main sightseeing, restaurants and bars. Clean, but with cockraoch every day in the bathroom
- (I did not like) : Price 125 USD / night, too expensive. Room very small, bed very small but mattress good. Bathroom very small (must put toothbrush on the WC tank). Breakfast poor (for the price), with no fresh juice, no fruits after 7:30 am, a lot of cakes with cream. Service with a lot of staff, but no service, except to control your room number.

My room was on the same level of the reception, it was noisy because of groups of people gathering there and speaking loud and the chat of hotel staff. My room door was flimsy and let in the outside light from reception, as well as the noise from people.

Hotel Gran Palace Santiago-Chile Huerfanos 1178
March 4/5 2009
I stayed there for one night . The hotel is good and clean, personnel very kind and quite helpful. Bed good. Bathroom small but reasonably equipped. They also offered me a welcome Pisco Sour. Excellent central position. It is a 8 / 9 / 10 floor hotel (so, reception upstairs) but this is written on the website, so no surprise.
Grey point, the breakfast ... industrial fruit juice, and no real coffee but Nescafè ( very common however in Chile). Almost no fruit, in a country which produces plenty.
Black point: when I asked to change money, OK we know that hotels are not the best place for that, but their rate was brutal, 430 peso/dollar rate, in a moment when the normal rate in any bank was 580 (at least).
There is more: you reserve on the net, for a price (I cut and paste from the site) Single room --- $39.800 / $92 USD* (which confirms the very singular change rate ) , and the final invoice mentions these two prices, peso final and in bold, dollar intermediate and in small.
But when you pay, on your account you pay "real" dollars (euro 74.75, in my case).
If your company reimbourses you by the peso , you are getting fooled. If the chilean government gets tax according to the "peso" price, they are getting fooled.
You may say it is not my business, but I will not show up in these premises again.

Hotel Gran Palace, since its lobby is on an upper floor of a building, is easy to miss but nonetheless pleasant and conveniently located a block or so from the Plaza de Armes and a few blocks more from the Pre-Columbian museum. It's in a very pedestrian-friendly part of Santiago Centro and, especially because it's high up, is not noisy. Unsurprisingly, probably, it is considerably less grand than it looks online. The rooms are clean and decently appointed...more in line with European 2-star hotels than the average hotel in a major American city. We only stayed there our first night in Chile, before heading South, and it served our purposes well...an approximately US$20 cab ride from the airport, in a very walkable area, had a room available for us at 10 a.m. when we arrived from the airport (no charge for the early check-in we got--that worked for us two other times in Chile as well), reasonably English-friendly. If we had it to do over again we might try spending the day in Vina del Mar instead--supposedly charming, although we learned to mistrust Lonely Planet. Santiago did not strike me as a great city for tourists.
