Plaza de Armas Hostel
Ranked #73 of 507 Specialty Lodging in Santiago
Reviewed November 12, 2009

First of all the location is amazing! Located in the center of Santiago, 3 minutes from the metro and the main shopping streets.
We stayed in what you might call a suite, a private en suite bedroom inside a sort of apartment with a kitchen and lovely balcony with a view of Plaza de Armas. It was spacious and clean.
The staff were extremely friendly and helpful.

I am a single mom traveller who wanted to spend some time in bistling Santiago de Chile after 8 days in the quiet of Easter Island before we went home!

I selected this accomodation because we are budget travellers (that's how we can afford to see the world), and the location looked great for what we needed (subways, shopping, culture).

Like many other said in the reviews, if you didn't have the help of a taxi driver, or a cell phone to call, you would have a HARD time finding this place. Fortunately, we had a taxi driver who had a cell phone. The building itself is not numbered, and because it is inside a building with lots of food stands and a mall on the 6th floor of the apartment building part of the complex, it makes it really hard until someone shows you the first time.

The hostel itself had a great atmosphere. they had no problem accomodating me and my 8 year old daughter (although we did book one of the private rooms with private bathroom). There are actually 2 private bedrooms in an apartment down the hall from the hostel. We had room # 7. Again, it was a furnished apartment with a terrace/balcony, livingroom, diningroom, fully furnished kitchen and two bedrooms with private bathrooms. In the bedroom was a TV and ample room for clothes and luggage. No safety deposit box or safe though.

The people in the other bedroom were very noisy and not very respectful as far as noise when cooking early morning or way too late at night, but that is the risk of staying in shared accomodations. Also, our bathroom had no hot water for the first 2 nights of our 4 night stay. The hostel staff assured that it worked for them and that it would be fixed, but I had to use the shared showers in the hostel for 2 nights if I wanted to bathe. Again, because the room we had was a seperate accomodation, it was tricky to pack a bag to go to the hostel to shower.

Our room also was next door to the kitchen of the actual hostel where a lot of nightly fraternizing and partying happened... On out 2nd night at 4 a.m. I finally had to leave the apartment and ask staff to shut the party down which they did immediately. So I guess I would say that if you can't sleep due to noise, this would not be our place.

It was not a bad place, I quite enjoyed the staff who were all really nice and helpful. I liked the location, and the atmosphere was fun. I can see why a lot of backpackers stay here and hang out here. The price is right for sure!!

FYI, daily breakfast was included in our price which consisted of cereal, milk, instant coffee/tea, juice and access to eggs if we wanted to cook them and a bun. There is also wi-fi in the main hostel, and there are 3 computers available for free to use within the hostel as well. The hostel was fully stocked with comfy furniture, tv's music, games, and a good sized kitchen to cook in for the backpack crowd.

Good location, good price is about how I could sum it up!! The Plaza De Armas is a culturally rich area and neighbourhood with lots to do, and access to the subway for getting to and from other places.

We stayed for two nights at the Plaza de Armas hostel.

It was difficult to find the way in. You have to look at the very top of each entrance for the big "960." All the while, beating your way through throngs of hotdog and pizza counters. You take an old fashioned elevator (includes man sitting on stool who pushes the buttons for you) and make your way up to the top floor.

The hostel looks like it could have been a wicked loft. Instead, they put a large cube of rooms in the middle of the place. The hallways go around the rooms like a donut. High 12' ceilings. The dorm room had its own private toilet, sink and mirror. Go out into the hall for the girls' and guys' showers. There's a private handicap washroom/shower. There are three computers for Skype and internet usage. There are also two televisions with DVD players and a small library of DVDs to choose from. There are two balconies overlooking the Plaza de Armas. You can sit on the balcony, sip your cheap Chilean wine, and enjoy the view. They have one of the cleanest and nicest comunal kitchens I've ever seen in a hostel (and I've been to many around Europe, South and North America).

Stuff you pay for, but cheap :
Lockers : 1,000 CLP deposit. I didn't try to fit my large backpack in the locker, I don't think it would have fit either.
Breakfast : 6$US. Includes four slices of bread. Individual jams and butters. Heaping bowl of cereal. Fruit. Coffee/Tea. Milk. Three eggs.
Laundry : 4$US. They do it for you. Within a day, they told me.

The vibe at the hostel is laid back, cool. Each room has two doors, front and back. Front door opens out to the lockers, computers, and the front entrance. Back door is a patio door that opens out to the back-hallway which is lined by large windows overlooking the square. From my top bunk, I could peek out of my curtains and see the clocktower (so even though my cell phone died and I had no adaptor to recharge it, I could still tell time!). With a view like what we had from our bedroom window, I couldn't believe we were only paying 16$US per night. In Canada, you'd be paying hundreds of dollars for a room like that. Bless South America!

The only major downside to this hostel, is that the last two feet of bedroom walls are glass. The lights in the entrance are still on at midnight; it feels like there's a nightlight in your room. There's also a "computer curfew" at midnight. We were told it's not rigidly enforced. Noise travels, which figures since it's a huge loft. I didn't need to wear my earplugs. There is no noise from the Plaza at night, since it goes dead by 10 p.m. On Sunday morning, the clock tower plays a French lullaby (Fais dodo, cher trésor, ferme tes yeux et dors...). Only some of the staff speak English.

One of the coolest hostels I've seen so far in my life.
