When I book to stay in a hostel, this is what I want - a beautiful, colourful place run by friendly & helpful staff. Hostal Rio Amazonas is such a place. There is a small artifacts shop near the entrance which is linked to the hostel. It seems to have varying opening hours, but with a good range of South American souvenirs. The hostel itself is clean, secure, and central. It is an easy walk to the Palace, the Plaza de Arms, the Metro or across the river to Bella Vista. A continental breakfast is offered in the morning with small snacks & drinks on sale in the afternoon/night. The staff are amazing and I got heaps of advice from everyone I spoke to.

I stayed in a single room (Room No. 12) on the second floor which has two windows which look out onto the small lane beside the building and the Argentinian consulate next door. It was a small but adequate room, big enough for me and my belongings. There was a bit of rust around the shower cubicle, but there was always hot water available when I needed it. Towels & soap were provided, and there was a wall heater in the room. A telephone is also available, if required.

My only negative comment is that the doors to the rooms didn’t have blinds or curtains, which in itself, I don’t see as a problem. However, the room opposite me had the TV going all through the night and the glare & flickering images lit up my whole room, which I found quite annoying, having woken during the night.

I would definitely stay at Hostal Rio Amazonas again, and recommend it to everyone.

great find. wonderful, friendly, warm, hospitable and lovely family, dog and staff.
When we arrived it was unseasonably cold - so even though the room has a heater - it's still quite chilly in it.
there were not too many guests when we were there and so that was rather nice as the hostel's common areas are not very spacious. we got room 38 - which has it's own quiet balcony. it's right at the back and top but they helped us with our luggage. The balcony's a real plus to sit outside on sunny days or in the late evenings. the room itself is not too big but that's okay. Having access to their kitchenette was also good as i can't eat that much dairy and bread which is served every morning. i was able to make oatmeal or eggs. Delicious juice. Yes have the submarino. it's good. Location is perfect to get to bellavista and barrio lastaria and lots of other places.

thank you to Rio Amazonas. We had a lovely stay in Santiago and that was also because of you.

Room Tip: Room 38 and any of those facing the courtyard.

We booked a family room at the rio amazonas for us and our two daugthers in july, and it was really a perfect hostel to stay for our needs: good location and family ambiance at a good value. The room was bright and quite large, everything was clean, and the best part was certainly the staff, very kind and helpful. We recommend 100%.

We stayed here twice in June. It's a nice place to stay. The hostel is centrally located, just a short walk (about ten minutes) to the bars and restaurants in Bellavista. There are some sights close to the hostel as well and the closest metro station is just about 200 metres away.

The best thing about this hostel is probably the staff, their service can be compared to what one would expect to get in a five star hotel, they're just more friendly and relaxed.

It's far from being a party hostel. There's a cozy lounge with a small bar by the reception, but people are not staying there late and there's no loud music when you want to sleep.

A simple, but delicious breakfast was included. The best about it was the fresh and home made juice they served. The coffee was good as well.

Our room was spacious, but too cold (it was winter when we stayed there). There was a radiator in the room, but it was turned automatically off at night. The bathroom was especially cold and it didn't help that the water sometimes was cold or luke warm.

The room was clean enough, except for the bathroom, the walls were especially dirty.

I stayed a week at the hostal and the location makes it a safe and easy option, with clear landmarks, for getting around. The choice of restaurants in the area is good as mentioned in several reviews below. The breakfast is filling, although it would be nice if they had real coffee (made with Central/South American beans) instead of Nescafe (which seems to be served in a lot of places in Chile). The rooms that face the street are noisy - constant traffic on the main street and dogs barking at all hours. On the first night, it sounded like a pack of dogs got together for several hours and barked non-stop. Bring earplugs. If you have a choice, request a room at the back or facing the courtyard, which is quiet in the winter months.

The rooms were warm as was the shower (not hot). The whole hostal is clean with lots of travelling information and different maps and items from various parts of S. America. The wi-fi is VERY patchy with better service in the lounge room on the ground floor - not so much in the rooms. The staff was friendly and helpful (organizing taxis, extra hot chocolates, etc) and there's a lending library of books in the office. You can have a submarino (chocolate chunks dipped in hot milk) or a variety of Chilean beer/wine in the lounge too. There are supermarkets/corner shops very near as well.

Room Tip: In the winter - get a room at the back or facing the courtyard - away from the street noise/dogs bar...

Rio Amazonas is well located for the tube and within walking distance of Bela Vista with its pubs & restaurants, Plaza de Armas, and critically the fantastic Mercado Central, modelled on London's Smithfields market and built in Birmingham in 1871.....an amazing fish market, but stay away from the big restaurants in the centre of the market and go for the much cheaper and better restaurants around the edges. The staff at Amazonas were ultra helpful and even allowed us a very late check out at no extra cost as we had an outward flight at near midnight. The room was a bit small, but clean, the internet connection was good and breakfast perfectly ample. And just around the corner is one of the best 'burger bars' ever. the Fuente Aleman...although calling it a burger bar is to do it a disservice, everything cooked fresh in front of you.

I dont know why this place has such high ratings. I think people get carried away with good service so they automatically give it a high rating, so I will try to be as honest as possible. Here are the good, average and not so good things I though about this hostel/B&B:
Good - service. This was excellent. The ladies we had the pleasure of dealing with were all outstanding. Always willing to help, always smiling. Nothing was too much for them, and they also let us store a box of wine there so we didnt have to lug it around with us for the next 5 weeks. The location was also very good. Just a short stroll from a supermarket, the subway, a pharmacy, plenty of shops, parks, restaurants. Neighbourhood seemed very safe too. The security to the building was also very good. The room we had was also quite spacious and clean.
Average - the beds. They were just ok. Quite firm. The breakfast was very basic. Bread, cereal and yoghurt. Nothing outstanding here. The WIFI was also very hit and miss and quite slow.
Bad - noise! Not just of the barking dogs and traffic (it is on a busy street) but also with wooden floorboards everywhere you can hear people walking around etc. I also think it was overpriced for what it offered.
All in all it was an ok place to stay, but I feel there are better options.
