“Best Guest House in the world?”
Reviewed March 5, 2013

Fantastic place. Glen and Bev make you so welcome. Attention to detail extraordinary. More like staying in someone's beautiful home. Amazing garden with herbaceous borders to gaze at. A terrace with fantastic views across the huge lake to the mountains. Fabulous food with Glen's home made ice cream a must. Rooms just right. Advice on hikes and visits with maps provided. We loved this place!

You can believe all the positive reviews. This was a marvelous place to stay. Glenn and Bev are the perfect hosts. Glenn always has great ideas (and maps!) on destinations and never steered us wrong. He also had the wood fired hot tub nice and toasty every night when we returned from long hikes with aching bones! The food was consistently very good and the homemade ice cream competes favorably with Cold Stone Creamery. Finally, they stock a full bar with excellent local beers (Chile has the best beer in Latin America!) and the expansive front patio provides a perfect relaxation area with lake and mountain views worth toasting. What a place!

Room Tip: The old "servant's quarters" wing is cool and quiet.

Glen and Bev were the most delightful hosts during our stay at their beautifully tended property. We called last minute for a reservation at the height of summer and were fortunate to book one night - I wish it could have been more. They have created a peaceful local outside of the intensity of town with everything one could want - very comfortable beds, modern bathrooms, delicious dinners and breakfasts featuring local goods (including Glen's delicious home-made ice cream) and plenty of options for the gluten-free traveler. The best part was Glen's extensive knowledge of the hiking trails in the area - thank you for taking the time to sit and talk with us!

When we arrived, Anka (office manager) greeted us and was very nice as she showed us our cabin, which shared a common wall with another. They had separate decks with an umbrella table and 4 chairs that had a privacy shrub between the decks. The rooms were clean and comfortable with a table, chairs, mini-frig, table-top fan and flat screen TV. The only negatives were the inability to regulate the water temperature in the shower (which went from very hot to very cold), and all of the purple bird poop on the deck chairs.

After dropping off our bags, we went down to the game room to read, and when I sat on a sofa up against the bar, it smelled like it desperately needed to be cleaned.

After we had a great chicken sandwich for lunch, we met Bev who owns the hosteria with her husband Glen. When we told Bev of all the car problems we were having (do NOT rent from National/Alamo because they have a terrible reputation in Chile), and that Alamo was supposed to deliver a replacement car that evening or next morning, she clearly was not interested in our problem. Before going back to our cabin, we asked her if she would call to see when we could expect the replacement. About an hour or so later, she stopped by our room to tell us there was no answer, and to ask if we would be staying another night. We got the impression that she waited until after 5 to call Alamo so she could get us to stay.

When we went down to dinner we met Glen who was very nice and makes a great pisco sour! After we ordered, Bev stopped by to ask if we would like soup or salad, giving us the impression we should order more. I ordered the chicken enchilada (or something like that), that was very good. My husband had some kind of mushroom pasta that had a lot more onions than mushrooms. (The menu that night was not as interesting as the one on their website, which was disappointing.)

At breakfast, I saw scrambled eggs and cheese on the menu, and mistakenly ordered a cheese omelet when Bev took our order. She said "we don't have that". I looked again, and realized it said scrambled eggs and cheese, thinking the cheese would be on the side. (Why not just say, so you want scrambled eggs with cheese?) No big deal. When it came, it was a very good scrambled egg with cheese-basically a scrambled, cheese omelet. Bev is clearly not somebody who should be in contact with the guests, but doing what she apparently enjoys, which is taking care of her pretty garden. Everybody else was very nice!

The next day, Bev called Alamo so my husband could let them know we were going to get a mechanic to check out the car, which we would be deducting from the bill when we turned that piece of junk in. Bev said they knew some good mechanics, and Glen went with my husband to translate. When my husband got back, we checked out and were a little surprised Bev charged 1000 pesos (about $2.50US) for the phone calls and copying our car rental agreement. Petty.

Villarrica is not a touristy town like Pucon, which is nearby. We found that most of the places in Villarrica did not accept credit cards or US$. Make sure you check with your bank to see if you can use the ATM machines. Our bank said we could not because of all the fraud in Chile.

Room Tip: The cabins are nice because of the privacy and view.

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. We are really happy you enjoyed the cabins, the tasty food and the beautiful garden setting. We aim to provide a haven of tranquility in which you can enjoy your vacation!

Regarding your Alamo rental car problem, we are sorry that you did not feel fully supported, it is always our goal to help our guests address any problems they encounter on their trip, so they have as good a time as possible. With this in mind, we called Alamo five times after you asked us to but unfortunately received no answer that night, so we made sure to call as soon as they opened the next day, but again to no avail (!).

Since we were getting no answer from Alamo, Glen volunteered to take time out of his normal morning schedule of shopping for grocery supplies and helping guests plan their day, to take you to a local mechanic we know to see if he could help with the problem. We really wanted to make sure you got all the help you needed, so we’re sorry you felt otherwise.

We certainly would not have tried to deliberately have you stay an extra night… for ethical reasons we would never want anyone to stay any longer than they wanted. If that were not enough reason (for us it is!), we were in the middle of the busy high season and were turning away people who had stayed with us before and really wanted to stay again…which is always sad for us.

We do hope the rest of your trip was good and that you had no further car problems. Thank you again for your feedback, we welcome all guest comments which help us to continually meet and exceed our guest’s expectations…

This was our second visit to Hosteria de la Colina. We had enjoyed it so much the first time that when we were going to be in the area again I didn't hesitate to contact them first to look for accommodation for this trip. I'm very glad I did. It was as nice as we remembered. It is a very relaxing setting with comfortable beds, a beautiful garden and a terrace with a spectacular view.
The food in the restaurant is wonderful and changes every day, so you don't have to go out to dine.

I look forward to our next visit.

We highly recommend this hosteria to anyone visiting the Chilean lakes district. Our room had a stunning view of the garden, lake, and mountains, and a very comfortable bed. Breakfast was included in the price of the room and the choices were vast...fresh fruit, cereal, yogurt, eggs, bacon, pancakes, whatever you could possibly want. They also serve lunch and dinner at reasonable prices, and the freshness and quality of the food is outstanding. The staff is attentive and the setting is lovely.

It}s like being at home, only more comfortable and relaxing!!

Room Tip: The Las Flores room has a lovely view and an an optional adjacent small bedroom if you have one or t...

Wonderful, wonderful inn and innkeepers. Can’t recommend it highly enough.
If you want a tourist setting, or are dependent upon tours to enjoy the lake area, go to Pucon. If not, stay here in Villarica and visit Pucon some afternoon.

Hostelria de la Colina is convenient to all the area’s attractions and is set in an absolutely lovely garden overlooking Lake Villarica with a view of the volcano. Wood fired hot tub is available. The rooms are charming with lovely views and the included full breakfast is delicious with numerous menu options.
Lunch and dinner are also served. We took all our dinners at Hostelia de la Colina, not only for the convenience but mostly because of it’s culinary delights. The kitchen is very accommodating and when made aware that we really enjoy vegetables, each night’s choices included more vegetables than any other menu we found in Chile. Glen is famous for his home made ice cream and home made jam. Both delicious!

Innkeepers Bev and Glen are very knowledgeable about the area and are so ready to answer questions or help plan itineraries depending on interests and abilities. Both English and Spanish spoken.

Foder's guide is wrong. Bedrooms have TV, if that is important to you.
