We loved that this hotel was outside of town right on the river. The back deck is lovely to sip wine and watch the sun go down. We even watched a sealion eating a fish at night. Amazing! Also the restaurant here is absolutely delicious! Order the lamb chops. Best meal of our trip down south.

We spent two nights in Valdivia and used T.A. to find somewhere more interesting than standard hotel; the Naguilan, on the banks of the river, is a good choice, easy to find, with a map (but when driving watch out for two way roads that suddenly become one-way, with scant warning - seems to be a Valdivia thing; the road leading into town from the hotel is one such). The main building, an old elite residence, is quite impressive (not unlike one of the lesser C19 Spanish paradors); the rooms are more modest - three and half stars at most - though comfortable; the wi-fi seems never to work in the rooms or the neighbouring lobbies. Maybe it works in the main building - quien sabe? We were there for a Friday and Sat. in late September, but it was pretty deserted; the restaurant was good (but quite pricey); the breakfast OK, though one felt that things could be better organized (disfunctional toaster; breakfast stlll being set up fifteen minutes after it was meant to start, etc.). So, worth a visit, but room for improvement.

This hotel seems to receive extreme reviews, good and bad. I found it quite enjoyable even enjoying the river traffic that passed right by our window!

For me, it seems that those who want to enjoy a Chilean experience like it and those who want to be a world traveler in Chile do not. Possibly this is a generalization that will not hold water.

If you stay here, be sure to visit the scenic parts of Valdivia outside of town as well as the city center.

We stopped here on our way south from Santiago to Puero Varas and were pleasantly surprised by this wonderful old property. They greeted us with a Pisco Sour served either in the classy lobby bar or on the patio by the river. We made reservations for dinner in the formal dining room. Both the food and service were good with a nice selection of wines. The complimentary breakfast was outstanding with a good selection of fine pasteries, nicely prepared scrambled eggs, sausages and potatoes which we had with our expresso drinks. The rooms were of moderate size, recently redecorated with quality furniture and fabrics. The hotel is located on the river in an old residential area now including several schools of upper learning. We walked towards town to see the fish and vegetable markets located along the piers. Definitely worth a slight side trip off the freeway and overnight stay on you way to or from the Lakes Region. We stayed 5 days in the Vulcan Osorno region and wished we had spent la bit less time there and gone by ferry from Puerto Montt to Chiloe Island for a couple of days.

Valdivia is a very attractive river town with day cruises on the river, good seafood restaurants and good beer. The Naguilan is a new colonial style one-floor hotel along the river front about a 10-minute drive from downtown. Our standard double was $105, very clean, good bed, TV, phone, Wi-Fi. If you are traveling by car, this is a pretty hotel at an affordable price.

Room Tip: All rooms have river view

Having spent the majority of our trip in small B and Bs we wanted to spoil ourselves on our way down to Chillan. This was billed as a top hotel and way above the budget we had set for each night. The first impression is old turn of the century river front converted warehouse, nice, looking a bit tired, but with two additional accommodation wings that do not complement it. The reception staff spoke no words of English and were not particularly helpful, for a big hotel I think that's poor. The bar did not look inviting and always looked like it was closed, the room was basic despite being a superior room! The pool was not well maintained. It was a soulless place.

There was good points, the food and wine, its' position for access to town was a ten minute walk, the river front, the wildlife that would swim past, its easy to get back on to the pan american highway!

I think to sum it up, it just was not worth the price we paid for the room.

I wanted to love this hotel, I really did. The location is beautiful on the river. I have mixed feelings, but overall, I would definitely not recommend this hotel.

The Good:
1- The location is beautiful. If you want to be in the center of town, this place is not for you. I liked being outside of the hustle and bustle.

2- When there was extensive mold damage in our original room, we were immediately upgraded to a nicer room (we paid for a standard room).

3- Brunch was great. The staff was friendly and the food was fresh and delicious.

The Bad:
1- We should have never been placed in a room with mold like that. It was something I've never seen before even in a cheap hostel.

2- The hotel is in desperate need of renovations. It is old and not particularly well kept. The standard rooms in the old wing are just awful. They are not worth the price. The superior rooms with terraces are nicer, but still in desperate need of updates. Everything is very, very old.

3- The hotel is just not a good value based on its condition.

4- The pool, oh the pool. The weather was great and we were so excited to take an afternoon swim. We we arrived at the pool, it was absolutely filthy. We skimmed the pool ourselves in an attempt to make it a little cleaner. The filter was not on and we asked a hotel staff member if they could turn the filter on given the fool was absolutely filthy. He said no, the filter is only turned on in the morning and night. I don't quite understand this since this renders the pool dirty during the day.

5- If you want to use the wireless, this will be a problem. It was very spotty and rarely worked. This was not a huge problem for us because we didn't really need the Internet. If you do, be aware, it does not work very well or very often.

I desperately wanted to like this hotel. Unfortunately, it was a huge disappointed. Stay elsewhere when you visit Valdivia.

Room Tip: Ask to be in the new wing. The old wing is old and falling apart!
