“Nice, confortable”
Reviewed November 6, 2008

Very beautiful place, the hotel, the nice people there, so quiet and peacefully. The little town Puerto Varas, and the Osorno Volcano all that was wonderful, the only problem there was the forest fires, all the smoke goes to the town. But the Colonos del Sur hotel excellent choice.

The express sits on a hill to the NNW of the downtown area of Puerto Varas (which was recently named the best city to live in for all of Chile).

The main hotel reportedly burned down and is being rebuilt on the waterfront near the casino. The Colonos Express is old -- our room was small but adequate, perhaps a little on the noisy side. The bathroom was clean but also small. Other than that, the only real downside was that the staff was not as friendly as other locations in Chile. Understanding some Spanish will make the experience at the Express a bit better.

The hotel has wonderful views of the lake, city, volcanos, and the Sacred Heart church across town. The hotel is three minutes from town using your feet, and perhaps five to ten minutes of the casino on the other side of town.

The breakfast buffet at the Express was mediocre, but numerous establishments in town serve very good food and wine. The salmon is all farm raised, of course.

We just stayed - unexpectedly - in the Express. Apparently, the main hotel (Gran) burned down within the last year. The first we learned about this was when we asked the taxi driver to take us to the Colones del Sur and he brought us to the express. The express has a decent location -- views are good and close to town -- but this is at best a 2 to 3 star hotel. If you stay here, ask for room 701 -- top suite with great views, just below the panoramic room at the top of the hotel. We ate at Meditarraneo and Govinda, two good restaurants close to the water and the hotel.

I have just arrived from a 3-night stay in Colonos del Sur Express Hotel. I had read the reviews before going to Chile and I was really concerned about the bad comments of previous guests. I tried to change my reservaton, but most hotels were fully booked (because of the winter vacation). However, I must confess that the hotel has positively surprised me! Maybe it has happenned because of a bad experience in Hotel Principados de Asturias in Santiago, where I had been for 3 nights before going south to Puerto Varas (by the way, I have posted a review about this experience). Anyway, in Colonos del Sur I met a very friendly staff, a clean hotel and a very good breakfast (some other choices of hot dishes could be available, though). Room is small but clean. Puerto Varas is a very small city and major attractions are within a walking distance from hotel. I would probably stay there again!

  • Liked — there is a very nice room on the rooftop, from where it is possible to have a nice view of the city.

Not a nice hotel to stay in. Tiny, cramped rooms with small beds (standard twin room). Various problems reported to reception but no action taken - see nail sticking out of the (equally cramped)bathroom floor photo; but there was also a light bulb broken and unrepaired after I reported.

Reception staff tried very hard to be friendly in the face of many frustrated and complaining guests I witnessed, but were generally overwhelmed and understaffed. I stood there 20 minutes trying to pay my bill when other guests were rininging up complaining about the small rooms etc. I too had already previously complained about the small room and they had showed me an alternative room which was exactly the same size!

Breafast food was OK though. The "business centre" was an alcove next to the dining room with one PC and Internet connection - hard to get at as it always seemed to be in use by game playing teenagers.

Won't stay here again. Shame because our travel agent booked fantastic hotels for all the other parts of our Chile tour.

You are better off at another hotel! Service is poor, and it's crowded with tourist!, and the pool is smaller than most children pool areas. The service is very poor, and rooms are very, very small! The staff is rude, and they won't do anything for you. I would stay at another location. The rooms smell, and the beds are small. Two people, barely fit in the room. The bed is a small single! Good luck, and stay a different place. Food is average, and it does have internet, but slow, and you have to wait a long line for it!. This hotel does not have any character. Just a place to sleep. Hotel sits on top of hill. There was another similiar named hotel downtown, that was beautiful, but it burned down. Don't confuse that hotel with this one! Go elsewhere! Be warned!

  • Liked — Nothing good! Luckly the bugs did not eat me alive!
  • Disliked — Everything! Go somewhere else!

I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights as part of an REI tour of the Lakes District & Patagonia in Chile. My rooms was EXTREMELY tiny--I barely had enough room to move around the 2 very small/short twin beds, and the bathroom was smaller than most standard closets. The water pressure was very irregular, often going from a trickle to a torrent, making it very difficult to use. The housekeeping service was absolutely horrendous. When I first arrived, I only found 2 face towels, & I had to ask the front desk for bath towels--of course, there was no apology whatsoever. The next day, the maid removed the used towels, but didn't replace them!! The front desk staff were lazy & unfriendly--they didn't seem to want to do anything for guests. My room was near a staircase & the restaurant, so needless so say, it was very noisy. Avoid this hotel like the plague! There appear to be other better alternatives in Puerto Varas. However, if you don't HAVE to stay in Puerto Varas, then DON'T, becuase it isn't very interesting or nice. Puerto Octay, Fruitillar, & Ensenada are much nicer nearby towns.
