This is an excellent choice, but book in advance. It is spacious, has lots of communal space and the rooms are large and clean. It has a certain charm, the chill out area was very comfortable and there are fires lit and the kitchen is well equiped and large. The breakfasts were basic however. Would recommend this!

We stayed here for two nights in May, being low season we where almost alone and had the kitchen and bathrooms to ourselves. We liked everything about this place:

- most important: heating!! Anyone who has been travelling in Chile in winter knows that the houses are very chilly usually. The common areas where very nice and warm and the room wasnt too bad, also they give you great thick blankets.
- Room was big enough, clean and with nice fresh linnen and towels.
- Breakfast is great with homemade bread and jams.
- Wifi works perfect in all of the house.
- Location is central but quiet.
- Kitchen is very well equipped.
- staff is WONDERFUL

It was a bit more expensive then other places we had stayed in, but its worth it. I dont know how it would be in high season and fully booked. But there were some plans about making more bathrooms.

Would definitely stay here again!

We stayed here for three nights. The staff were wonderful and helpful. The hostal is very central but the lack of enough bathrooms and their conditon was very disappointing. Due to the age of the building there needs to be considerable upgrading. However cleaning was excellent
I was in a dorm room where my locker was broken and unable to be locked. The beds were comfortable and clean. Ear plugs a must.
Home mad bread was great. Basic breakfast was ok. Good wi-fi connection.
Great people I met here.

Compass del Sur has a sweet owner from Sweden who speaks great English, and her husband is from Valdivia nearby. The front desk staff is extremely nice and gave us very clear instructions on where everything is upon arrival. There are two community computers and good free wifi throughout the lovely, old house with solid wood floors.. The bathrooms are spacious, have good hot water supply, were always stocked with soap and paper (no fee for your bath towel which is nice) and one was even redesigned while we were there. Breakfast is coffee or tea with milk, homemade bread with butter and jam, as well as small ham and cheese slices. You can order oatmeal and more for US$1-2 extra if you want a larger breakfast. The beds are comfortable and the rooms are well lit. It is only 4-5 minutes walk to the lake and probably much quieter than staying on the main road. There is a nice living room with a tv and plenty of seating, and a spacious, fully-equipped kitchen for your use between noon (after breakfast) and 10:30 pm. They have maps and info to help travelers make the most of their time in Puerto Varas in surrounding areas, and clearly care about doing a good job.

Room Tip: I saw all but 1 room and they all looked good.

This hostel is an old Puerto Varas house, made of local wood, well maintained and polished and yes, it does creak but that is what ear plugs are for. It is very good value for money with the dorm rooms being spacious and with individual lockers and by peering into the more expensive accommodation I saw that they are also spacious. The camping area is well sheltered and drained. I'm not a breakfast person but again from what I saw it looked very good and was included in the price. Two free internet computers and the Wi-Fi throughout the building, including the dorms, works very well and although expected nowadays, all to frequently in some hostels doesn't happen with various excuses. The staff, both front desk and 'backroom', are exceedingly friendly, helpful and informative and amazingly, when considering they are dealing with travellers, seem to be permanently smiling. This is a hostel that others in the area should emulate as in my experience, non of them can compete with Compass del Sur. Value for money? Terrific.

Room Tip: They all creak

The room was fine and comfortable but the bathroom & toilet left a lot to be desired. Our room was right next to one of the shared bathrooms so at least we could hear when people were entering or leaving, to use it ourselves. In the morning if one of us were lucky enough to get into the toilet or shower we could knock on the wall to let the other know to get ready to come in. The sink wasn't fixed to the wall and the shower was in a bath - with a sign saying 'please don't get out of the bath with wet feet'. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. It just wsn't the place for us.

We stayed there four nights. The rooms are spacious enough, the beds comfortable. There is a big kitchen to use for the guests. Breakfast is basic, you can add components (like real coffee or juice) for an extra charge. Good was the home-made bread they did offer.
The staff is quite helpful and gave us informations what to do and organized a car to rent for the next day.
There are only shared bathrooms and sometimes you had to queue. By the end of the day the waste baskets were overflowing.
The house is very noisy due to creaking wooden floors and noisy water pipes. The surroundings are quiet and it is a short walk into town.
We were there as a family of four, one of us left one night earlier, but we had to pay the full amount for a double room, they wouldn't charge us the rate for single use for that night.

Room Tip: Choose a room to the street side because in the back there is the noise of very loud water pump
