not only are the people who run the hostel very friendly and helpful but finally a hostel with hooks to hang your towel and shelf-space for your things, as well as lockers for your valuables. Really well equipped kitchen, maybe the best I've seen anywhere. 24 hr tea and coffee. Fast Internet. Huge collection of movies.

I think the Footprints guidebook says breakfast is included, which it isn't

We had a wonderful stay at this hostel. Very convenient location, the owner is well versed in English, French and Spanish and gave us some fantastic advice on tour operators for our up-coming trip to Bolivia. We had a large double room, great value! Big, clean, shared kitchen and really comfortable communal areas. Only downside was the showers weren´t great but regardless of this, we would have happily stayed for longer.

ps. we found no issue with ´noise pollution´ due to either students or creaky floors (it´s a beautiful, old building...get over it)

We loved our stay at Margouya 2 - even though there was a mix-up with our reservation, the owner went above and beyond to fix the problem. Our room was basic but spotless and even came with an extension cord which we appreciated, having several devices to charge and often only found one plug in hostel rooms. The kitchen was one of the best-equipped hostel kitchens we've ever seen (there was a coffee machine, a French press and even a blender), spacious, clean and with a big fridge for guest use. The big communal table in the living room made it easy to get to know fellow travelers, and the big TV with a huge DVD library was great for rainy days. Pierre, the owner, also provided us with a map for a self-guided city walk as well as hiking trails around Puerto Varas, which we used. The location of the hostel was also perfect, just off the main road and close to two big supermarkets. We didn't want to leave!

We stayed here several times as we used Puerto Varas as a base while visiting the surrounding area. The hostel is an old building made of wood, so is a bit noisy and creaky, however that's all part of the charm.

The owners and staff were all very friendly and they really helped us to plan our time in the area. The location is pretty convenient, just up the road from the main part of town.

Sometimes the 2 bathrooms are busy, but if you're flexible about when you shower this isn't a huge deal.

Most importantly, it seems to encourage a social atmosphere, more than many other places (although it's not a party zone). Obviously this depends on the guests, but it just had a good atmosphere to it.

The hostel was more of a language school which meant the doorbell rang constantly with pupils turning up for a class..one on one classes only though. The building is old and creaky with the sound carrying throughout. There is a neurotic American working there who really needs to practice her hospitality! We asked the french owner for some advice only to be told he wasn't working (even though he was in office) and to speak to neurotic American!! They really have to work on there approach to guests.. They value their mountain bikes more than there guests. Our Brazilian friend asked to borrow bike at 5pm to go out..no problem, but as it got late the neurotic American thought he had run off with the bike!?!?! She entered our dorm without knocking on 3 separate occasions to look at the guys bag...she then proceeded to take his bag and lock it in the office to wait til our Brazilian friend returned. She was convinced he was coming back late to grab his bag and run away with bike!?!?! Absolutely disgusting behaviour!!

Margouya 2 is a beautiful historic wooden house on a quiet residential street a few blocks up a hill from the the center of town. My private room was very large, with an extremely comfortable queen bed, a desk, a chair - I was happily surprised to find all that in a hostel! But the real treat is the spacious common areas, well-equipped kitchen and the friendly, warm and multilingual owners, a Chilean-French couple and their adorable little girl. They were helpful, outgoing and fun to talk to. They run a language school as well on the first floor, and have very high quality bikes for rent on the premises. They cook in the shared kitchen too, as did lots of guests, which made for a nice low-key communal vibe.
I didn't find the place noisy. Yes, it's wood and it creaks, but everything went quiet at an early hour. The only downside is having just two bathrooms for everyone. But if it's not full or you don't shower during prime time it should be fine. I just showered in the evenings after getting back from activities and never had to wait.

I recently spent several nights here in this small family run hostel. The owners were super helpful, and very welcoming, and helped me with info and to book tours to the surrounding areas. The hostel itself is nicely decorated and has great kitchen and living room facilities.
I have seen a lot of people reviewing this hostel and complaining about the noise (the hostel also hosts a language school, which seems to attract a lot of children). I can understand the complaints as in the daytime the hostel does seem a little overrun with students and kids, but compared to other places I have stayed the hostel is wonderfully quiet at night when it matters most so that it is possible to get a good nights sleep.
Would recommend staying here.
