Apparently this restaurant has been made famous because someone famous visited here. We just wanted to eat in a smaller place that had typical seafood and a southern Chile atmosphere. The restaurant itself is original with good decor for the style of restaurant. However, it is not a kind of restaurant where you walk in and think you'll spend 50 dollars for two people and only order one alcoholic beverage. The location does not merit the price, as we spent less on better food with better views in other places. We ordered a seafood plate and a meat plate and they were both fine, but should not have cost $20 per plate because they were simple and could have been priced much less. It wasn't that good, especially with the lack of service. The two women that were working were rude and pushy, shoving a plate of merluza in my husband's face when he questioned if what he ordered was indeed congrio and not merluza. Our waitress had told the other back in the kitchen, and the second one walked up to us in the middle of our meal and said, "Who had the question about merluza? This, THIS is merluza, you're eating congrio". Thanks for asking us how our meal is going, by the way!

By the time we were finishing up it was getting crowded and since it's a small space, they were interested in getting us to pay the bill rather than being polite. We did not enjoy our experience here. There are much better "typical" places in Puerto Montt (Angelmó) to eat food like this for at least 30% less. Don't believe everything a famous person tells you.

I've read some of the mixed reviews. I had to try Donde el Gordito no matter what anyone said because Anthony Bourdain had eaten there. ha!

I was there for an early lunch in the middle of winter. There were only 2 other tables of people when we arrived, but by the time we were finished, people were starting to line up. It was easy to tell that most of the lunch goers were locals. There's a reason for this. It's well made, hearty food, at a reasonable price. Donde el Gordito isn't a touristy place. It's a place for anyone, locals and tourists, who want a great meal.

The restaurant itself is quite small. It's fun to watch the waitresses work the room with such skill and ease brought about by years of camaraderie. At times they seemed to work as one, weaving skillfully in and out of tables. They are also very observant. Our friend was struggling to cut her milanesa with a butter knife. Without saying a word, our kind waitress noticed the struggle and fit in dropping a steak knife off at our table into her complex dance of bringing this and that to different customers. That's service!

I have nothing but nice words to say about the food. It was simple, well made, REAL food. The portions are more than generous. My conger eel with seafood sauce and rice was enough for 2 meals. The fries were a delight. They were perfectly made home fries.

I was feeling a bit sick that day and the waitress kept my teacup filled with hot water. Thank you, nice waitress!

The menu is available in English and Spanish. I would recommend the Spanish version if you are at all familiar with the language. Our waitress also spoke quite good English, so that was a bonus surprise!

My best advice would just be to go early. The place does fill up fast.

Felt that this restaurant has got so popular and so well known that it really couldn't cope. What was probably a great experience during the early days has turned into something that has grown too big. To accommodate this extra business we were packed in with so many other people and looking around we saw other diners being pressurized to finish up to allow for people standing outside to come in. The display of currencies from around the world did nothing to help with the ambiance or decor. The bread was stale, the fish was ordinary. When we pointed out that the salmon with camorones was so dry it was virtually inedible, the owner really didn't care. Reasonably priced food is no good if you can't eat it. There are definitely better places in Puerto Varas to go

We went in after having seen the review from Anthony Bourdain. It is in a little market and is a intimate restaurant with a ton of character. My husband had the Lomo al Podre which was more than enough for him, and I enjoyed the Salmon con camarones. We loved the atmosphere and the warm greetings from the owner and his accommodating staff. There was no language issues even though I do not speak fluent Spanish.
