Hostal Tren del Sur
Reviewed May 10, 2011

Tren del Sur is only superficial decoration and false advertising. The lobby looks really nice. There's always someone behind the front desk. The hallways look great. But then the rooms are run down. The beds are old. The bathroom was dirty and had hair scattered about from previous guests. I had to call to get towels. Then I had to call to inquire about why there was no hot water. I was told to run the water for 10 minutes and hot water would eventually run. This felt particularly hypocritical since there was a "Save Water" sticker in the bathroom, which I suppose is their claim to being "green." When no hot water came, I called again and was told to run the water for an additional 15 minutes. I questioned why and was told that the water pressure was very bad and the water was being warmed by a wood stove...again, not environmentally friendly. I finally gave up after running the water for nearly 30 minutes, as instructed by staff.

In the morning, we went to breakfast and the dining area only had two other people sitting in it and all dirty tables. The kid behind the counter was just sitting there playing on his phone. So we cleared a table ourselves and sat down wondering what the deal was with our included breakfast. We finally got up to inquire with the kid. He said breakfast was over and that he wouldn't give us food. We pointed out that there was over an hour left of breakfast, so he left to go check downstairs. Meanwhile, one of the two other guests there gave us the yogurt container at their table since they weren't going to eat it. When the kid returned, he seemed upset with us and wouldn't give us the time of day. It was really strange. So much for the included breakfast. We were just ready to get out of there at that point.

Upon departure, we encountered two Aussies at check-out who voiced how upset they were with the hot water situation. Like us, they had been instructed to run the water for 30 minutes and were appalled at the waste of water and complete lack of hot water. After they left, the owner came out to flirt with me while my spouse was getting groceries across the street. He wanted to talk about my iPhone, how he had one too, and how he'd been to the USA many times and all over the world for hotel marketing purposes. I told him he should really be putting his energy into figuring out how to run his hotel successfully. I told him we didn't have hot water and he pretended that this was the first he had ever heard anything about this problem. What he didn't know is that I was standing right there as the Aussies complained about their situation within earshot of him. Lame excuses. He quickly ended our conversation and disappeared.

This place is all about presenting a shiny exterior and "boutique" feel, which it does in the lobby and halls. But as a tourist, you're wanting basic amenities like a good bed, clean room and hot running water. Good place to come sit in the lobby. Bad place to actually stay or eat, blick. Do not recommend.

Stayed here one night on our over night trip (Cruce de Lagos) from Bariloche. The hotel is very charming and is wonderfully decorated. Rooms are a good size, clean and a good size bathroom. The hotel is paying attention to the environment in re-using building materials which is great to see. Also hot water is only turned on at certain times which we fully support.

We arrived around 10 p.m. and we were still available to get dinner. They offer dinner (set meal) every night and is like a home cooked meal. Wine and beer also available. Good breakfast offering cereal, yogurt and baked goods. They even went to the extent of getting some ice for my swollen knee.

Unfortunately, my husband fell very ill in the early morning and I had to take him to the local hospital emergency. The staff couldn't do enough for us. They called a cab for us and upon our return they allowed us to stay in the room past our check out time so that we could be more comfortable. They also have a nice lounge area. Even offered us an expresso while we waited for a taxi to get to the bus station to return to Bariloche.

The hotel is about a 10 minute walk from the downtown and is very quiet. They offer 2 computers for guest use and also offer Wi Fi.

Can't say enough about the staff. Although they don't all speak english, we were able to communicate with our limited Spanish. After all, we are in their country and we should make an effort to learn their language to be understood!

This was a great find in Puerto Montt, a really interestingly decorated place with cosy rooms, that had cable tv and good wifi. I was only here for one night ahead of getting the Navimag ferry. I didn´t get the amazing service that other reviewers have mentioned, the staff were a bit annonymous and no-one gave me any local info or a map like previous reviewers have said, but it didn´t matter as I didn´t need any info for my brief stay anyway. Unlike some other reviewers, I thought the breakfast was fine, I was happy with the self service cereal, yoghurt, fruit and toast after weeks of only being given bread and jam for breakfast in other places in Chile and Argentina! And it was the same price as the place I´d stayed in Puerto Varas that wasn´t nearly as nicely done inside, so I thought the price was fine.

As the other reviewers mentioned, the owner of Tren del Sur is awesome. He sat us down when we got there, got us some welcome drinks and just talked for a long time. The staff gave us a map and showed us how to get around town. We were only staying for 1 night and leaving early in the morning, so the owner had his staff prepare us a morning snack so we had something before getting to the airport. This was a very appreciated step.

The rooms were okay, but not considering the price we paid. We paid only because it was one night. They advertised wifi everywhere in the hotel but it just didn't work on the bottom floor.

The bathroom was a little dated, but clean. There was free parking which was also nice.

But for a 'budget' b and b, we stayed in better places for a better rate throughout our trip in Chile.

We spent two nights in Puerto Montt before boarding the Navimag ship to Puerto Natales.

Before I comment on the hostel, let me say something about Puerto Montt. Don't stay there unless you really really have to. Its too big, too loud, too dirty and there is absolutely nothing to see or do, nor will you find a good restaurant. If you want to visit
Chiloe or you are waiting (like we were) to board the Navimag ship, we highly recommend staying at Puerto Varas instead (its a close bus/cab ride from Puerto Montt).

Tren del Sur is a nice hostel with a very helpful owner and a special decorative twist (cool lobby), yet it is too expensive for what it offers (especially given the fact that its located in the unpretentious town of Puerto Montt). While the lobby is great and very boutique-style decorated, the rooms are too plain and dont have windows. Moreoever, the breakfast is very spare with very little options.

What we liked:
- great owner (Mario). Mario will do everything to help you out, organise trips and give you recommendations on where to do your laundry, exchange money etc. He's a true host

- ok location. on the positive side its a safe neighbourhood in reasonable distance from the city center. on the negative side, you dont have the ocean view (which would be the obvious choice in Puerto Montt)

What we didnt like :
- value for money is not right here. beyond the stylish lobby, there is nothing too special about the hostel. rooms are plain and dont have windows and breakfast is very plain and the self-service comes across a bit careless. in addition, this is not touristy pucon, but unpretentious puerto montt - so prices shouldnt be that high.

- breakfast. breakfast is plain with very little options beyond toast and corn flakes and the self service has the character of carelessness (cornflakes in the plastic bag, jam and butter are covered with cellophane).

Overall, nice place with a great owner, a true host, but its too expensive for what it offers; especially the rooms and the breakfast dont correspond with the price.

We stumbled across this charming little B&B while spending a night in Puerto Montt. The owner, Mario, was very welcoming and extremely helpful. He is also very artistic, and you will see it in the way that he has cleverly decorated his place with old train tracks, railroad ties, history books, etc.

Mario will go out of his way to provide any help that he can. He helped us solve an issue with LAN airlines, helped us arrange for an affordable car service to the airport, and gave us some great recommendations for things to do around Puerto Montt.

I highly recommend this place if you are staying in PM.
