We went on board the navimag from porta natales to Porta montt and it was one of the worst experiences of our six month travels.
The on board addition of cows transported live for slaughter who were crammed in horrific conditions, made to stand for 4 days and not able to lie down and whose stench only intensified sea sickness- which was already unbearable- made the trip horrendous.
The navimag charges western prices and therefore opens itself up to certain standards and scrutiny. With those prices comes a responsibility. Although we appreciate that animal treatment in chile is of a different standard to what we're used to we felt like some of that high price should have gone to the poor animals.
Trying to fall asleep at night with the distressed sound of the animals and the over powering stench made the experience incredibly unpleasant.
If you want to take the navimag we hope you will also take the time to raise these issues with the crew as the more people who protest the more navimag must take responsibility for these issues

We took the ferry from Puerto Natales to Puerto Montt. Awful cabin (inside) for which we paid $990 each!. Our bathroom was down the corridor. The ferry is an old freight ferry which has had three passenger decks welded to the top. Awful food too. If this ferry was in Europe, it would be condemned! However, the trip itself was wonderful, sailing past glaciers, fjords, smoking volcanoes, whales, etc. It is a superb trip which deserves a better ship.

If you've ever been on a Carnival cruise, this probably isn't for you. This is not a cruise but more a chance to tag along on a cargo ship. I loved the trip. The scenery was incredible (we had good weather) and saw lots of wildlife, including dolphins, penguins, sea lions, many albatross and other sea birds, and even a couple of whales in the distance.

The food while not what I would eat if I could chose was not THAT bad. We are a good amount of meat and they tried to always give us vegetables although I can't say they were fresh. the fruit was fresher. Lots of bread and very salty dishes. I would suggest supplementing by bringing on fruits or maybe some avocados or hot sauce.

We stayed in the C cabin with 4 bunks and lucked out with a great roommate. It was tight with 3 people in the cabin but it was very warm and cozy to sleep in. The bunks were very comfortable and were made up by the cleaning staff every morning.

The staff in general was awesome! The kitchen staff was very sweet and accommodating. If you visit the bridge some sailors will talk to you about what's going on and it's a good way to learn about the are and practice your Spanish. the guide on our boat was wonderful. he gave a "charla" everyday about wildlife, history, culture etc. he was very knowledgeable and helpful.

It's a great trip to do if you've been traveling for a while and still want to see beautiful places and take some rest t the same time. It's easy to meet other travelers on board and while you might feel a little antsy by the last day, I highly recommend this trip!

I'd say you don't need to do this twice but you definitely need to do it once.

My wife an I took the ferry from Puerto Natales to Puerto Montt after completing the W hike in Torres Del Paine. We booked the cheapest accomadations, the hallway bunks and that worked well for us. We were only in our bunks for sleeping and spent the rest of the time on the deck or other parts of the ship. The scenery was incredible and the staff was very friendly. Many of our friends that we made on the W also tooks this ferry and it was nice to spend time with them on the boat. I thought the rates were reasonable, 4 nights and 3 days all meals included for $380 US per person. We lucked out with nearly perfect weather. This and Torres del Paine were the highlights of our trip to South America.

I took the 72 hours cruise from Puerto Montt to Puerto Natales. Was it overpriced? Compared to the hotels and restaurants and land transport in Southern Chile it probably was. But it was certainly not as overpriced as the Fantastico Sur refugios in Torres del Paine. The scenery was excellent. But the food was of college cafeteria quality. The tourist manager, Mauricio, was enthusiastic and friendly. He keeps you posted about the schedule - there was a morning briefing everyday about what you could expect to see and when the ship will pass them. There were also talks about the geography and wild life of the region. The ferry was old, but the crew worked very hard to keep things clean. I stayed in the "big dorm" (essentially the corridors), got a reasonably comfortable bed with curtains and a locker next to the bed.

The price is different for the north bound and south bound voyages because the scenery is slightly different (depends on where the sailing goes at night) so do check the itinerary.

If you have a binocular, bring it. We saw several whale sprays at a distance.

And by the way, if 72 hours is too long for you or if Patagonia is too far, you can consider the 16-hour Inside Passage voyage offered by BC ferries in summer between Prince Rupert and Port Hardy. It is basically a lighter version, minus the glacier, of this Puerto Montt - Puerto Natales cruise. The scenery is very similar - the boat sails in narrow channels with mountains on both sides. And if you are not unlucky you can see a whale or two.
